In a Class By Themselves

UNABLE to stem the tide of murders of media people, the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is now suggesting that journalists do the job themselves. Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said the government would allow legitimate journalists to carry firearms if they wanted to do so."
Because we all know the folks who tell us what our opinions should be are better than the rest of us...

Still, you gotta love the editorialist rejecting the proposal and abdicating all responsibility for self defense. What kind of coward would expect another man to put his life on the line defending something he himself will not?

"A New Weapon"

Jonas Thage feels a lot safer since he declared the community recreational centre he runs in Diepkloof, a suburb of Soweto, a 'Gun Free Zone' (GFZ). "Before this was a GFZ the situation was terrible but now, at least during the day, there is no problem," he said.

GFZs - public places where firearms are unwelcome - have been endorsed by Gun-Free South Africa (GFSA), a gun-control lobby group established in 1994 as a response to decades of armed violence.
That's right, Jonas--you go on "feeling" that citizen disarmament zones will keep you safe. And who but an "authorized journalist" would consider this a new concept?

We all know predators obey signs.

Say, how about putting up "No Hunting" signs on the veldt if you guys ever have a lion problem...?

Mill Valley Schools to Institute Knowledge Control

Every year, physics teacher David Lapp brings his Korean War era M-1 carbine to school, fires a shot into a block of wood and instructs his students to calculate the velocity of the bullet...

The rifle demonstration would not even be an issue if an anonymous parent had not complained.
We can't have teachers being:

a. Independent-minded;
b. Innovative; and
c. Actually educating their charges.

Jeez, what do they think this guy's teaching, physics?

And the indignant worm of a "parent" probably "feels" totally justified...

Police Chiefs and Prosecutors Against Self Defense

A campaign by gun rights advocates to make it easier to use deadly force in self-defense is rapidly winning support across the country, as state after state makes it legal for people who feel their lives are in danger to shoot down an attacker - whether in a car-jacking or just on the street...

[C]ritics - including police chiefs and prosecutors - warn that criminals are more likely to benefit than innocent victims.
Yeah, only The Only Ones are qualified to make such judgments...

This Day in History: May 25

With George Washington presiding, the Constitutional Convention formally convenes on this day in 1787. The convention faced a daunting task: the peaceful overthrow of the new American government as it had been defined by the Article of Confederation.
