A Matter of Ceremony

A charge of carrying a dangerous weapon was dismissed against a Sikh man arrested in Kern County with a ceremonial dagger in his possession.
Good.

If we have equal protection under the law combined with "no laws respecting establishment of religion," I'm sure I can do the same, right?

Of course you could, since you're a white guy who doesn't wear a turban as part of your religion.

But if we actually had equal protection under the law combined with no laws respecting establishment of religion, this guy wouldn't have been arrested by a racist scumbag for something that isn't even illegal in California.

Hmmmm...

Would it work if I engrave a cross on my guns?

Oh, wait... I forgot. Christianity is the one religion that is politically incorrect, and therefore is fair game.

David, the Sikhs have dealt with madness like this before. The Secret Service wanted to disarm them of their knives before they could visit with the president.

I can't get the link to work right now, but the quote from the Sikhs was: "We cannot undermine the rights and freedoms of religion in the name of security."

They declined to see the president because they wouldn't be disarmed. Good on them.

Yeah, I wrote about a previous encounter, with my recommendation, here.

Most recently that was during the Pope's visit when they said that. Secret Service took charge of his security on US soil and it was their rule. He should have overruled them.

Ken,
Seriously? I would have sworn that carrying a concealed weapon was against the law in California. Though, as some of the kirpaans have 3-3.5" blades that might fit under the allowable length, though the kirpaan is a fixed blade knife.

I thought they were worn openly in sheaths, otherwise I believe it would be a felony...?

Also though, you can't have over 2 1/2" on school grounds, or 4+" in public buildings--all kinds of hysterical nonsense that no one knows about or can remember...

"I would have sworn that carrying a concealed weapon was against the law in California."

Carrying a concealed fixed blade knife is illegal, but carrying one openly isn't.

In this case, he was doing neither--the article says it was in his truck. There's no legal restriction there.

When I'm president, you can come visit me wearing any kind of knife or gun you want. Deal?
