Shocking Memories

He doesn’t remember the epileptic seizure he suffered July 18, 2007, when he was 16...

His brother, Travis Baker, 17, remembers all of it. He recalls screaming at Corinth police to stop shocking Blake with a Taser. His mother, Deana, remembers hearing Travis crying on the telephone.
He'll remember this. He'll never forget it.

The city seems very concerned ... about the money it'll have to pay if sued.
12 Taser discharges. Well, the usual policy seems to be "Shock 'em 'til they stop jerking."
Get it?

They had better pray that that is an extremely peaceable family.

There are some peaceable families that wouldn't consider a lawsuit at all, but would still seek to correct the malefactors.

Trust me, I know this.

The medics screwed up here too.

a) When a family member tells you the patient has issue x when he comes out of a seizure, take it as gospel. They've seen it more than you have, and know what they're talking about.

b) This behaviour is not uncommon in post ictal patients. By moving aggressively and trying to strap him down while he was still disoriented, they provoked his violent behaviour. They could have easily waited, and should have. Once the seizure is ended, the patient is in no danger unless he seizes again. Agitating him is bad for everyone involved, risks unnecessary injury to the patient and responders, and could potentially induce another seizure.

c) As a medic, you are the patient's advocate. These medics should have told the officers to back off.

d) The medics jumped to conclusions. When a patient has just had a seizure, and has a known history of seizures, you cannot determine if the seizure was caused by drugs or not. Neither can you distinguish between a prolonged post ictal state and an altered mental state caused by drugs. I have seen post ictal confusion last 10 to 15 minutes or more in several patients.

Finally, these guys should NOT be covering for the idiots that zapped this kid so many times. They should be held responsible for their part in this fiasco, too.
