On June 11, offended by his manner, the townspeople seized Jones. Midshipman James Moore, commander of the Margaretta, and some of his officers escaped through the windows in the church and returned safely to their ship. They then threatened to bombard the town unless Jones was surrendered from the town. Meanwhile, a group of 40 volunteers organized a pursuit, led by Jeremiah O'Brien and Benjamin Foster, and captured the Unity;
