Intent

My reply was again simple.

Much was left to the individual. That is the beauty of a Constitutional Republic. [More]
Yes, that's what was intended alright...

We need to go back to the gun laws of, oh, 1750. If you could afford one, you had one. If you could physically carry it, you did. If your vest or coat hid it, no one cared; everyone assumed a gentleman was armed.
Go back farther, and you were EXPECTED to have one, and the law said when you went to church it had to be beside you in the pew. Danger was everywhere and sudden.
Much like today.
It was the same with all freedoms once. People who are old today were able to, if they decided to build a house, buy the land, buy the materials and build it. No permits, no codes, just the skills and an understanding of safe construction. Now the neighborhood association has to vote on your mailbox design and color. Are you in conformance, comrade citizen?

In the Ten Commandmants, where most have read "Thou shalt not kill" should instead read "Thou shall not murder". Killing an attacker in self-defense was encouraged. Stoning was used to kill those who did not follow the Law. Swords and knives were used to defend oneself.

Exodus 22:2-3: "If a thief is caught in the act of housebreaking and beaten to death, there is no bloodguilt."

Luke 22:36: "[Jesus] said to them 'But now one who has a money bag should take it, and likewise a sack, and one who does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one.'"
