Ammunition Controversy Shows Failure of Mainstream Media to Inform Gun Owners

But the other thing I want to point out is a total failure of "mainstream media," the ones going belly up, the ones deriding alternative media, bloggers, activists, et al, to bring this story to the public's attention. This isn't a case of them getting it wrong--this is a case of them not getting it at all. Here's the irony: If we had read about this on any of the establishment outlets that traditionally fail us, most would have accepted it without question. [More]
Doubts were raised about the authenticity of my report yesterday. Today's Gun Rights Examiner column puts them to rest, and observes the irony of placing trust in the same media that consistently proves itself unreliable.

Also get the latest from my fellow GREs.

Please share this far and wide--and particularly on those message boards still challenging this story.

Now that the truth is out, what are the RINO's going to do?

Nothing?

In a hearing in Congress last week, some deputy assistant something-or-other held up a .50-caliber cartridge and a .223 cartridge, and there was a Barrett Light .50 on the table, as they discussed "how American straw purchasers are arming the drug cartels."
I think they LIKE Scrap Venture mutilation of military once-fired casings. The Republicans will not raise a fuss, because it will make them appear to be fanatical devotees of the gun culture, and they now hate that like vampires hate sunlight. They have decided moving to the Left means sucess. If you're to the Right of the Klintons, you're mentally ill today.

If the media DID report this abuse of the taxpayer and the Second Amendment, it would rate a one-inch paragraph and would be lauded as a crime-prevention measure. Only some kind of fanatical gun nut would make custom-reloaded ammunition, the better to kill people with, my dear. See?

Not that any more confirmation is needed, but as a Georgia Arms customer, I received an email from Mr. Haynie, saying the same thing.

David...

Thanks for adding your very respected reputation in exposing this travesty. And thank you for your hard work at due diligence.

Now, if only everyone will get as excited about this, and send e-mails and letters to Congress, the way they got excited when a certain hunting writer and editor lambasted the use of AR-style rifles in the hunting fields.

If we "Zumbo" them, perhaps they will think thrice before they attempt such again.

Thanks for all you do, every day, to protect our 2nd Amendment rights. It is highly appreciated.

this is by no means official, and i have no idea how accurate this is, but here's what's happening at arfcom:

The facts as I know them, which come directly from candid discussions with my CEO, indicate the following:

- Prior to 11/2008, Demil B items required no mutilation for sale to the public. That policy changed in November, but several exceptions were granted. Expended munitions brass was one of those given a waiver.
- Enter the new administration. Since Demil B category items had been given a broad, general label as "national security sensitive" someone above the DRMS (likely in the DLA) reviewed the policy and immediately went with a CYA policy and yanked all exemptions. No thoughts or considerations were given to the implications of this policy change, but this directive was issued to DOD Surplus effective immediately last week.
- Shit storm blows up as a result. In particular, the letters, phone calls, and emails to our legislators, the media, and anyone else who would listen caused this policy to be review post haste.
- As of this morning our company was informed that expended munitions brass will now be reclassified as Demil Q –– which requires no mutilation unless sold to a foreign country.

There you have it. The policy change was simply the result of some n00b administrator attempting to close a perceived "national security" loophole and brass got caught up in the snare. There was no political motivation behind the policy change, but it is good that people like us were suspicious, got involved, and helped bring about a resolution.

I hope you're right, but lets keep this "shit storm" raging until we have confirmation.

Republican Senator Richard Burr's Staff exhibits at least one example of tone deafness, for what it is worth:
