i sincerely doubt you can remain properly anonymous with this technology. it's reasonable to assume the police don't have any immediate access to identifying information about the message, but your messages are not kept only on your phone (if at all), they're kept on the network's side, and are the property of your service provider.

Back in February the Clackamas SWAT team shot a 68 year old marijuana grower out in his rural farmhouse, then arrested his 80 year old wife. They decided it would be a good idea to bang on a farmer's door at 10pm, of course he answered with a shotgun. You can imagine what happened from there. This county is right next to mine, I apologize on behalf of my neighbors to the entire rest of the United States.
