Don't Collaborate for the Other Guy

Feds and Firearms Industry team up to stop so-called “straw purchases.” [More]
Sorry, Lawrence Keane. When you abet infringements on the right of the people to keep and bear arms, you lose me.

You think being their bitch will make the antis like you, and the overlords respect you? They may have you convinced they'll eat you last, but eat you they will.

This troll is posing as "Firehand" from elmtreeforge@blogspot.com, who is one of the good guys. You need to quickly squelch this ruse by banning the fraudster.

Regards,
MALTHUS

Deleted his comment. I won't tolerate liars. Besides which, his banner graphic on his site, which links from his screen name, is not something I will subject my readers to.

I'm going to ask a stupid question (and admitedly, probably get flamed).

It's a given that, right now, there are criminals who should be in prison, but aren't. They are bad people, but smart enough to know they need firearms to effectively continue doing bad things to good people (and both armed and unarmed good people suffer when armed, bad people roam the streets).

Given that the gun shop owners don't have any real power to change these laws, against a government which seems to think we should give criminals a 'second chance' at the expense of everyone else, shouldn't the gun shop owner still be doing what he can to prevent these bad people from getting armed? The ideal solution is out of reach (keep them in prison), but if he can stop bad people from getting guns, isn't that still a desirable ends?

I do understand that anonymous purchases have their use, and I can see the argument that cutting down on straw purchases cuts down on both the good and the bad. But is that the only real argument against what they're doing?

(And please do note, I'm not saying what they're doing is right or wrong - I'm simply trying to understand the argument here, since I feel like I'm missing something. And yes, I've been on the wrong side of this when my wife sized up a gun for herself, but didn't have her license on hand for NICS.)

To nezumi:
Without conceding that anything like NICS is reasonable, BIDS (Blind Identification Database System) would be a significant improvement: it provides the same check while allowing the purchaser to be unknown to the government. There is also a link in the left sidebar.

Wow, cool idea! There are some problems with that particular implementation, but it's a very cool idea. Definitely worth some thought!
