She fatally confused them with Yogi and Boo-Boo. Too much television and Disney movies.
Bears are a dreadful beast and when one encounters a bear in the woods you have zero clue if that beast is going to attack you or not. Pepper, bear spray is next to useless and bells only tickle the bears poop shoot after eating the person who owned the bells and the bells themselves. One thing and only one thing is effective if under attack, which means the bear in moving to you and won't stop until that bear closes the distance. That effective tool is called a S&W X Frame, the 460 should work like a charm and holds five shots. 4 for the bear and 1 for yourself if the 4 for the bear somehow didn't hit the intended mark.
Note: Yes of course there are long guns that could do better but I'm talking something that can be worn on the side out of the way unless needed.
