What is weird about this case (ok, there's a lot of weird stuff about it but let's just take this one aspect of it) is that Hal supposedly worked for the FBI until 2007.... but the "hate speech" he was arrested for was written in 2009.
I've interviewed Hal's lawyer a number of times it seems that Hal was not spying on White Nationalist groups but rather being used as an elaborate plot to root out moles in government orgs. But Hal is also known for his very tall tales so it's anyone's guess really.
