Wow. Just... wow. The republic the Pledge was for is dead. Why pledge allegiance to the corrupt bunch of thugocrats in DC?

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance for the origin of the Pledge written by Francis Bellamy.
Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellamy_salute for the original Bellamy salute.

I will tell you now. I pledge allegiance to my country. That allegiance does not always extend to its government, but always to its people and its constitution.

The republic I swear allegiance to, does not countenance violation of another's rights to their opinion. If someone else doesn't want to be loyal to the nation, ok. Just don't hurt it, don't help others hurt it. Do those things, if I can I will hurt them.

However, because my allegiance does not necessarily extend to overreaching government it is ironic that it could be said that I am hurting the nation, by those who demand unquestioning obedience to government no matter how they may violate the nation's principles.

Or to put it another way, the type of bastards in government service that murdered more than 80 people, many of them children, near Waco, Tx can make the claim that any person who would not have committed those murders if ordered to do so by governmental authority are traitors. There is no sensible rejoinder to that, because those people are sociopathic with no moral rudder. There are only two ways survive these people, either keep them ineffective by never allowing them to gain power over others (well, that horse is out of the barn) or bring violence to bear in large enough measure that they run or die.

For others who wish not to stand and pledge allegiance the worst we are allowed to do them is just diapprove, or not, on a personal level. That is the republic to which I am loyal.

I myself pass on the socialist fealty oath to a state.
