South African Police Disarming Citizens as Their Need for Protection Grows

So just to make sure that if things really get bad, and they'll be absolutely powerless to protect much more than themselves, South African police are telling citizens to hand in their "unlicensed" guns--or else. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column notes now might not be a good time to turn 'em in.

i seem to recall one of jeff cooper's articles where he relates a story from his friend in SA. the friend tells him about how everybody had to "re-register" their weapons.

the gist of the story is, even registration for the blatant purpose of rounding up firearms -- the apex of gun control short of actually going through the motions of forcefully rounding them up -- just isn't good enough for the simplest of statist governments. the very point of having registration is so that people will fail to comply with the regulations. if you didn't take away enough guns on the first try, "re-register" them. again and again and again.

see, nobody shot back the first time, so what's the risk?

unfortunately, i should note, i've never been able to find what i read again, even though cooper's and farnam's writing is mostly online. as you might have guessed from that sentence, i can't provide details or even testify to the accuracy of my memory -- it might have been farnam who wrote it, not cooper.

come to think of it, i can testify to the relative inaccuracy of my memory, in general.
