If the police were allowed to be armed, there might be a coup.
Looking into the far future, one might see America, if the Bradyites and the UNites were to somehow, improbably, win.

The function of police in India is quite a bit different than what we're used to in the US. Yes, they're a bit corrupt and there is lots of graft, but they don't go around like stormtroopers either. They don't bust down doors in the middle of the night and shoot grandmothers. Frankly, I like the demilitarized version of the police for daily interaction a lot better.
