My wife, who doesn't like guns, ran out of gas on a long, empty stretch of interstate one night, before we had cell phones. A kind passer-by offered to take her to a friend's house, a farmstead with its own gas pumps, and drive her back to her car.
As they went farther and farther back on a two-lane road, she began praying that he would kill her quickly and with a minimum of pain.
It turned out OK. They were what they said and she was soon on her way home.
When you have no gas, you're pretty helpless. But when you have no gun, you're really, REALLY helpless.
