I've always thought movie theaters were mass shootings waiting to happen (dark, bottlenecked entry/exits, loud explosions happening in movies so people don't know what's going on, etc). Most movie theaters (at least in Ohio) are posted CPZ's, which assures a defenseless audience.

I have a couple of comments about this incident.
The first one is related to my experience in the construction business and my time as a young punk trying to sneak into the movies for free - Aren't these emergency doors supposed to be locked so that they can only be opened from the inside? If so, who let him in?
The second comment is - I'm glad this didn't happen where I go to watch movies because I would have had to do something to stop the shooter and quite possibly ended up dead myself. The difference between me and (apparently) everyone in that theater is that I carry a tactical flashlight and a pistol (and while I'm definitely not the best shooter in the world, I'm not too terrible either)
I've also had some experience dealing with pepper spray/CS gas. Was it military or police grade gas? There is a huge difference. Also, where it came from can possibly be tracked by the numbers stamped on the canister (I don't know of any civilian pepper spray grenades available (though I could be wrong, I have never looked for them), but I know that the military canisters at least have a lot number on them and I'm pretty sure the police ones do too.
This was a terrible thing that happened, but there are a lot of questions in my mind about some of the details that I haven't seen answered anywhere yet.
It's apparent that the government MUST CONTROL all PhD candidates.
If it saves just one life...
