This Day in History: July 13

On July 13, Capt. John Jones was leading a force of 35 Patriot militia (Burke County Regiment - NC). They were going to join Col. Charles McDowell in North Carolina. On the way, the Patriot militia surrounded and attacked a Loyalist camp of American Volunteers at Gowen's Old Fort. The Loyalists were pursuing Col. John Thomas's 1st Spartan Regiment. The Loyalists were forced to surrender without any serious resistance. [More]
