No Argument

Ban those guns. Neuter them. I'm fine with it. I can hunt with my shotguns and my deer gun (although I've grown tired of hunting), and I can protect myself from miscreants with my trusty .38.

To some in the gun-owning fraternity, this view makes me a traitor. [More]
Ah, finally, a point we can agree on!

I actually enjoyed bits of this post for the eloquent description of the intense feeling of awareness that comes with owning and using a firearm. I cannot pretend that firearm ownership has not changed me psychologically, especially in how I view and prepare for violence. He is also correct that acute awareness of how insecure and uncertain the world really is can be truly unpleasant.

Where he starts to depart from reality is assuming that divesting oneself from the gun can make that awareness go away, it can't and it shouldn't. He also bestows benevolent motives and self restraint upon the gun lobby which simply doesn't exist. Take those assumptions away and he has stated nothing more then he expects to be last to fall.

It's a pretty good attempt at a third way, fifth columnist approach to promoting the current "assault" mania. However, his argument fails as an incomplete hypothesis, since he makes no mention of the need to restrain our already over-empowered government, which is the purpose of the Second Amendment.
I found the idea of "incomplete hypothesis" in this letter:

Unfortunately, one has to subscribe to the filthy rag "New Republic" to leave a comment - so most comments are friendly. Here is what I would say: "Mr. Kirn, you are a fool. After this ban passes, on the next one you will forfeit your 'trusty .38' and that .22 you drew on the meth addict. That won't be enough, because the killing will continue. Your rifle will be next, and finally they'll take your pump shotgun and leave you with a double barrel and such heavy restrictions and licensing fees you'll decide it's not worth it and turn it in even though you are not required to. I said you are a fool; I was too gentle. You are something much worse, a being typified by one Vidkun Quisling. Look that name up, for your grasp of history is obviously insufficient."

Oh no Fudds, there will not be another 1986. If you think the general public hates people who own AR clones, you should hear what they say about people who destroy for pleasure the animals they love.

If you try to throw the rest of us under the bus again, the closest you will come to tradition is playing "Duck Hunt" on your wide-screen television.
