On January 25, during the early morning hours, Lt. Col. Lee's troops slipped undetected down the river and landed on Georgetown's undefended waterfront. He divided his force into two parties: Capt. Carnes led one party to seize Lt. Col. Campbell in his headquarters near the parade ground; Capt.
