To Whom It May Concern

While metal 3D printing opens new vistas, it also raises anew concerns about home-made firearms. [More]
True. For instance, I'm concerned about evil totalitarians and useful idiot Luddites interfering with what could be the start of something wonderful.

I thought that site was supposed to be about the benefits of technology. These guys just had to let their anti-progress "progressive" (every day is Opposite Day, remember?) leanings surface and stick that dig in there, didn't they?

This is the comment I left for them;

"While metal 3D printing opens new vistas, it also raises anew concerns about home-made firearms."

And yet with simple machine tools, I can make a firearm, with no serial number, for my personal use and it's no big deal. People need to get over the fear that someone will "print" a firearm. I can go to the local home center and buy everything I need to build a working sub-machinegun. And you people are worried about a printer? Maybe you should be concerned about plumbing supplies.

Nobody's fully worked through all the implications of personal manufacturing. A lot of business models are likely to get trashed by it so a lot of economic incumbents are going to be looking for ways to keep their cushy places without having to undergo the risk and hard work of retooling for this new, more productive world.

Don't let the gun implications become the scapegoat.
