According to state officials, a shipment of 40,000 tons of salt has been halted because the ship does not have an American flag. [More]Seriously? The government puts people's lives at risk over that?
Who did the halting? Who is responsible? Do they have names?
I have to believe this explanation is incomplete. The alternative is just too damned bizarre.

Extending unsafe road conditions? Putting lives at risk?
Why the outrage? It's not like they lengthened the bridge commute for a few people for a few hours or anything -important-.
Why do they insist on using salt anyway? We've been using sand for a very long time. Works fine, and does not rot out the body of our cars and trucks. Much easier on the roads and the snow plow equipment too.
Win/win. And everyone has sand or dirt in their back yard...
