I believe the first use of the term 'dark' in reference to Trump's speech was used by Tom Brokaw in commentary immediately after the speech was over.
My point being that the Dems (and their media) knew what he would be saying from a release of the speech beforehand, and knew how they were going to attack it before it was spoken.

Also- Rush Limbaugh pointed out last week that the term 'dark' was used because it has subliminal racist undertones.
