Up the Down Staircase

A Toronto man who spent $550 building a set of stairs in his community park says he has no regrets, despite the city’s insistence that he should have waited for a $65,000 city project to handle the problem. The city is now threatening to tear down the stairs because they were not built to regulation standards. [More]
How dare he expose what could be done if people handled things themselves instead of handing them over to incompetents and thieves.

This reminds me of "The Astronaut Farmer."

Tell me about it. Out here, in 2009, we had a homeless man who lived under the town bridge die and leave a quarter of a million dollars to the town for charitable projects — one stipulation being that part of the money was to be spent to install a public restroom at the tiny park at one end of the bridge (for the benefit of the homeless buddy he left behind).

The town spent $73K on the project, then spent more to redo the restroom… twice. The last time was because “the tiles didn’t come out right.” (Or perhaps, “there were still checks left in the checkbook.”)
