Kick the Can

Senate Democrats relinquished on the government shutdown Monday, agreeing to vote to reopen the government but insisting they’ll keep fighting for illegal immigrant “Dreamers” over the next weeks, with another shutdown deadline looming Feb. 8. [More]
And they made it clear what it is they're demanding (see Cardin text at 12:56:12):
WHAT IT DOES IS IT ALLOWS THE DREAMER STATUS TO MAINTAIN AND PUTS THEN IN A PATHWAY SO THEY CAN HAVE PERMANENT CITIZENSHIP HERE IN THE UNITED STATES AND THEY KNOW THAT THEIR FUTURE IS AMERICA.

Translation: Democrats realized they jumped into the shutdown without enough advance preparation in their captive media to ensure that Trump got all the blame. Too many people understood what party was really at fault this time around, and they can’t have that.

Limbaugh had a suggestion that he declared the Left would never agree to. The Left says they only want the undocumented to be able to live their lives in peace in the USA. The path to citizenship and of course a permanent Democratic Party majority is therefore just a boogie man the GOP uses to poison the debate. Limbaugh's suggestion is that the (however many million) undocumented could stay and get legal residency with the proviso that they never get to be citizens or vote (legally). The Left would scream bloody murder and reject the idea out of hand.

The Dreamers could be handled similarly IMHO. They get the paperwork that normalizes their status in the USA if and only if the parents who broke the law to bring them here go back to their country of origin and work through the the process the way they should have in the first place. I doubt the Left would go for that one either.

But the bottom line is this. The Simpson-Mazzoli Act of 1986 was only passed after a compromise where the President and Congress agreed that the amnesty being granted would be a one time deal and that the border would be brought under control so that no future amnesty would ever be needed.

Someone needs to step up and demand that the current President and Congress honor the promises that their predecessors made.

Or take them all to the woodshed for a sound and well deserved ass whuppin'!
