An armed Broward County Deputy Sheriff aka Resource Officer patrolled the 45 acre high school campus that has around 3,000 students, yet did not knowingly encounter the shooter. The shooter killed 14 students and 3 adult teachers/coaches. The shooter wounded 15 others. The shooter pulled a fire alarm box to draw his victims out of the class rooms into the hallways.

U.S. News & World Report in their 2017 high school rankings gives the student population at 2,972 with a 23:1 student-teacher ratio. There are 129 teachers on campus. The number of non-teacher staff such as custodians, office workers and cafeteria workers is undetermined.

Approximately one out of twenty adult (of all ages) residents of Florida possess a state-issued Concealed Weapons Permit. You could reasonably estimate that 10 of the teachers and staff at Douglas High School could possess a Florida CWP. That estimate could be higher if Florida did not prohibit all but law enforcement officers from possessing a firearm on school grounds. Florida could change that law and train teachers and staff to carry firearms on school grounds to protect their lives and the lives of the students. The current situation of expecting one armed law enforcement officer to protect a 45 acre multi-building campus is analogous to using a postage stamp sized umbrella in a rain storm and complaining that you are getting wet. Gun Free Zones work to benefit the shooters, not to protect the victims.

Just the possibility of meeting armed resistance could have changed both the encounter and the choice of targets.
