I remember in a story by Robert Heinlein that there was a society that practiced justice by what they called "evening". It worked like this:

You're operating a vehicle and hit a pedestrian why suffers a badly mangled leg. It takes 40 minutes for medical help to arrive and the person is transported to a hospital where it's determined the leg must be removed.

If a judge determines you are at fault you are transported to the original scene where your leg is mangled, you wait 40 minutes, and are transported to the hospital where your leg is removed.

I'll bet folks would be very careful drivers. This guy should be treated like the child he killed.
