Just as the people they're running against the same people who offered us John McCain, Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon, both Bushes, and (playing both sides of the aisle) Kristen Gillibrand and Mike Bloomberg. Not to mention every politician featured in every one of your "big but" postings. If LaRose's record on guns is so all-fired great and gun owners get out and vote, it shouldn't matter. It's a fallacy to assume that people deprived of the opportunity to vote Libertarian will vote Republican. Every drug, sex, green, or open borders voter who votes Libertarian is likewise "stealing a vote" from the Democrat.

Mathematically the L has zero chance. It will be the R or the D. Experience hath shewn the Rs are hurt worse: https://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/examining-libertarian-vote-depth

The paper you cite explicitly analyzes the voting preferences of voters with *generic* libertarian beliefs who do NOT vote for Libertarian Party candidates.

You cannot blame LP candidates for "stealing" votes they never in fact received, and you cannot blame a party for espousing ideas that align with the preferences of some voters when those voters choose not to vote for that party anyway.
