Ourselves and Our Posterity

The U.S. needs a birth rate of at least 2.1 children per woman to replace the current population of the country without experiencing population decreases. [More]
What should the population be? Would deleterious effects of a decrease be the same across the board? Aren't some populations increasing? Is that good or bad? What effect is that likely to have on the balance of political and economic power? Would the main effect of a decrease in the productive sector mean a more rapid collapse of the Ponzi scheme?
