It took two years for the US government to decide that it would be unwise to try Jefferson Davis for treason because it wasn't just unlikely that it would prevail, it was likely that the results of the war of invasion and conquest of the lawfully seceded southern states would be overturned. General (at the time) U.S. Grant stated such as did others. Some of the finest legal minds in the US were volunteering their services in Davis' defense.
