We're the Only Ones Confiscating Enough

They called the Crestview Police Department. Officers came to the party and checked the couple's identifications to make sure they weren't convicted felons, police spokesman Maj. Andrew Schneider said. The responding officer initially allowed the father-to-be to keep the gun, which is a Mossberg 715T semi-automatic rifle. The next day police asked him to turn it over to the department. [More]

"Asked"?

Funny thing is, that is just a Mossberg 702 Plinkster (10/22 clone) with a black plastic clamshell screwed around the receiver to make it look "tactical".

I’m thinking this was just crap reporting. They may in fact have “asked,” with the intent of printing and tracing it so they could maybe go have a talk with the loon who dropped it off at Goodwill loaded and disguised as a toy.

So a couple of idiots give you a Plinkster at your baby shower, and then they call the cops on you because you have a Plinkster? In Reg Fucking Flag Florida???

That's a good way to become my ex-friend.
I would have thrown them out and not let the cops in.
Never invite "The Man" into your life.
Never associate with fools and jerks who invite "The Man" into your life.

Fortunately, the cops were apparently decent about it and the story has a happy ending. I guess it didn't happen in Broward or Dade:

FYI: This was Valparaiso Goodwill, Serial number was clean & Crestview Police said do what you want with it. The gun now belongs to Baby Jonathan who is due to enter this world any day now

Oops, I didn't notice that the happy post was edited to add that the cops came back and requested the gun be given to them for 3 months.

Actually that makes sense if they're treating it as found property rather than purchased property. Hang onto it in case the guy who hid it in the box asks for his gun back, then give it to the finders when he doesn't show up.
