When the bulk of Virginia, except for the northwestern part, wanted to secede from the Union, the state split in two. Perhaps it is time for that to happen again.
However, the cultural divide in Virginia isn't unique. Look at a Red/Blue map of the 2016 voting results by precinct and you'll see Blue enclaves surrounded by seas of Red.
One thing is pretty certain. If the country were to split along Red/Blue lines, the Blue enclaves would have a lot of trouble with food and energy issues. I'm just as sure the Red areas would have issues as well. I'm reminded of a colonial era cartoon of a chopped up snake with the caption "Join or Die."
