NRA's Answer-Free Zone

Paul Grant wrote to NRA with a concern, and a great one at that:
I am disturbed by Wayne LaPierre's support of "Gun-Free Zones" (http://www.nra.org/Speech.aspx?id=6043). As recent events at Virginia Tech demonstrate, "Gun-Free Zones" are an oxymoron at best, and a killer at worst. Criminals don't obey the law, period. Wayne should renounce his support of "Gun-Free Zones" and embrace the rights of students and teachers to be lawfully armed, or consider resigning his post. In addition, it is profoundly disturbing to me that he and the NRA are betraying their principals and the members by negotiating with the other side to further restrict our second amendment rights. I am speaking of the NICS enhancement bill.

Every time you compromise with evil, evil wins and you lose. Soon there will be nothing left of our rights and evil (Sarah Brady, et al.) will have won.

That was a pretty straightforward explanation of his position, wouldn't you agree?

Here's their response:
Hello and thank you for contacting NRA-ILA in regards to the Gun-Free Zones issues.

Let's always remember first and foremost that it is those deranged individuals who have committed horrific crimes with guns at schools that are themselves responsible for their acts. Clearly it is already illegal to bring a gun to school and use it to take the lives of others. In committing these criminal acts, numerous federal, state, and local existing laws are broken. You can't make such heinous behavior any more illegal than it already is.

Of course, in the aftermath of such tragedies, Americans ask "why" and seek solutions to prevent future tragedies from occurring. If we are truly to find solutions to preventing school shootings, a wide range of remedies must be on the table for consideration, including whether or not there should be a lawful, armed presence on our nation's campuses. However, at the top of the discussion list, should be trying to figure out what has gone so wrong in these instances that an individual(s) feels the need to take the lives of young students in what should be a safe environment. One thing that is certain, however, is that passing additional gun control laws should not be part of the discussion, as again, you can't make what these criminals do with guns at schools any more illegal than it already is.

Pretty slick, huh? You notice she didn't actually give any kind of direct response to his concerns or anything.

Nope, the "top of the list" has nothing to do with NRA's "Purposes and Objectives" as defined in the Association Bylaws, "To protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, especially with reference to the inalienable right of the individual American citizen guaranteed by such Constitution to acquire, possess, collect, exhibit, transport, carry, transfer ownership of, and enjoy the right to use arms, in order that the people may always be in a position to exercise their legitimate individual rights of self-preservation and defense of family, person, and property, as well as to serve effectively in the appropriate militia for the common defense of the Republic and the individual liberty of its citizens;"

If we are to believe Ms. Anglewicz (and why wouldn't we?), NRA's Number One Job is to figure out why psychotic killers "feel" compelled to kill. Meanwhile, nothing in Wayne's position has changed: The only ones who should be armed on campus are, well, "The Only Ones."

You Might Be a Terrorist

What with suggested legislation by the feds to disqualify "terror suspects" from purchasing guns, Andre Campos points us to an official Alabama website that thinks people who oppose gun control qualify.

This isn't the first time this has happened. Those of us who follow such things will recall that six years ago, Angel Shamaya reported on a "Joint Terrorism Task Force" brochure put out by the Phoenix branch of the FBI (front side/back side).

See? According to those who would disarm us, anyone who advocates differently must be either a terrorist or a nut.

So THAT's What the Founders Had in Mind...

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has rejected a proposal to let governors command active duty troops responding to disasters, officials said Wednesday, though the Pentagon will grant National Guard leaders more authority to coordinate with other military and homeland security agencies.
Just so we're clear on who the boss is under the "collective rights/militia = National Guard" theory.

Showing Contempt for Fred McChesney

McChesney, 48, said he saw it as an opportunity to show his contempt for firearms by featuring anti-gun content on the domains he is selling...

McChesney, who has been "hugely anti-gun" since his brother shot him in the face with a BB gun when he was a child, said he hopes to use some of his domains to draw attention to what he calls an epidemic of gun violence in America.
You don't know contempt, you blood opportunist, but you do know shamelessness. The disgust I feel for you as a man and as an American is just about total.

This Day in History: May 13

I have reason to apprehend, from the information I have received, that desertions from some of the Virginia Regimts., now on their March, will, in all probability be not less frequent, than they have been from some from Pennsylvania, which are in Camp.

New Addition to the Blogroll

Check out:

Technical Difficulties Viewing WoG?

Just got the following email about this site:

Using IE6.026 on Win2K ... The text doesn't show up until I've scrolled below the links on the left side.

I've said it before--I'm not a tech-oriented person, am pretty much a slave to the boilerplate Blogger template, and don't see my skill level changing in the near future. This is the first I've heard of this complaint, and can only say I've viewed the site on IE and Firefox, from multiple computers at different locations and never experienced this phenomenon.

Anyone else get these results, and if so, any ideas on something so easy to fix it even I would be capable of doing?

Pistol Whipped

Robb Allen has a request:
I hope you can help a fellow gun-guy out. I've decided to start looking into getting a rifle but realized I'm only a handgun type guy. I'm asking for help...so if you've got any advice or could spare a link I'd greatly appreciate it.

If you have some useful advice, please share it with him at the title link.

We're the Only Ones Deviant Enough

After an on-duty, male Philadelphia police officer pulled another man over in the Fairmount Park section of the city, the 18-year-old male veteran took a man from the car to a nearby area and forced him to engage in undisclosed sexual activities, authorities said.
I think this story is written wrong--perhaps it should have read "18 year veteran" or the victim was an "18-year-old male"?

Regardless, Philadelphia--isn't that where they're pushing for even more citizen disarmament? And remember--no finger-lifting.

We're the Only Ones "My Space" Enough

A photo on the same Web page shows the Brooklyn cop in uniform at his graduation from the Police Academy.

Posted just below the photo is a vintage drawing that shows a cop holding a gun. The drawing reads: "Hi, I'm going to Kick your a-- & get away with it."
And remember--you can't "lift a finger."

Militia HQ Fire "a Concerted Effort"?

"I think the arson had to do with people wanting it gone," Bright said of the fire at the militia headquarters. "I believe it was a concerted effort from the Justice Department. They may have wanted to cover something up."

I don't know what evidence there is for this statement, but this level of suspicion and distrust is a consequence that should not be unexpected. I'll contact Mr. Bright and see if he wants to elaborate.

Everything in its Place

As the Second Amendment states, there is a place for guns in our society. The shooting range is one of those places - Emory's campus is not.
Uhh, I hate to break it to educated college people and all, but that's not what the Second Amendment states...

But then again, you evil little proto-fascists know that.

We're the Only Ones Avoiding Criminal Charges Enough

A police officer will avoid criminal charges despite admitting he took marijuana from criminal suspects and, with his wife, baked it into brownies.
This should infuriate on so many levels.

The whole damned War on Drugs has spawned all sorts of accepted police state tactics, from monitoring of financial transactions, to asset forfeiture, to no-knock home invasion raids...

Kathryn Johnston
was killed by the bastards who planted pot in her house. Donald Scott was killed by official thugs who openly planned seizing his land.

Cancer patients are being persecuted, their agony further compounded--even where the state allows medical marijuana because the feds will not.

And Dirty Sanchez here, and his sow of a wife, get brown-faced on some really good sh... and then get to waddle from the legal consequences?

A lot of you sent me this story--too many to credit, plus I'd already seen it on TV, but Dave Licht, as usual, had some particularly perceptive observations:
Have you heard the tape being played on national news of the cop that stole a suspects pot, cooked it into brownies and ate them, then called 911 asking for "emergency rescue" because "they were dead"?

The tape is funny on the surface but the media (and EVERYBODY) is missing the point astoundingly on this one; How often do cops in this department get away with stealing contraband or personal property from suspects? Does this department have a policy of shaking down suspects for personal gain? How many guns has this cop / this department / police EVERYWHERE stolen from citizens (to use as throwdowns or for the personal collection???) How often do suspects have contraband or personal property stolen by the police in departments EVERYWHERE? Are police in this country developing a certain quid pro quo with certain citizenry (like in Mexico) wherein police can rob and abuse citizens in exchange for not arresting them (or even if they do arrest them)?

I know this is not lost on you but the portrayal of this case and this tape being played on the national news as a joke misses the point entirely...and deliberately.
Yet we're told resistance is futile. We're warned against lifting a finger.

Some General Housekeeping

I've been gone for a week out of state where I had extremely limited time to access a computer. Thus the lighter than usual posting of last week.

Please understand that I simply won't have time to answer each of the emails sent to me during that time--the choice is either do this work or that--although I will read each of them and respond if it looks like a reply is really needed. Also please understand if I don't post a story link sent in--I just don't have time to get to them all, so have opted to just go forward from this point.

I certainly don't mean to slight anybody.

This Day in History: May 12

With respect to the prisoners sentenced to die, you are the best judge of the circumstances of their crime and of the characters of the men, and if either of them should appear to you, in other respects, as well as in this instance, worthy of severity, I think it would be well, for example sake, to inflict the punishment on him, and pardon the others, especially as the Regiment, to which they belong, has been particularly addicted to the mischeivous and hateful practice of desertion; But if there are any palliating considerations, or if the general conduct of the men has been pretty good, I should wish you to incline to the side of lenity. Rigour, in our present dispersed situation, would not have its full effect.

Limited Posting Continues

Again, for those of you who haven't read any of my previous disclaimers from this week, don't take it personally if I haven't answered your email.

"Not a Fundamental Right"

Christopher Boldt, an attorney for the city of Dover, said Bleiler's right to bear arms was not infringed when he lost his concealed-carry license, since it did not affect his ability to carry a gun in plain view. He also said that the Legislature has the authority to require permits for concealed weapons.

"The right to a concealed handgun is not a fundamental right," Boldt told the justices.
Sure it is, Chris. Keeping and bearing "shall not be infringed." Seems pretty clear to anyone who's not a subversive liar. There are no restrictions on how you do it--no morally legitimate ones, anyway.

But now, thanks to this guy Bleiler reportedly acting like an ass, we'll probably get to see yet another inroad in denying "permitted" carrying codified and chiseled into stare decisis stone.

"Criminals are Going to Get Guns"

[T]he Senate on Wednesday approved a ban on high-capacity gun magazines.

Ammunition clips holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition would be illegal under legislation that passed...and was sent to the House.

Sen. Dan Kotowski sold the bill as one that doesn’t limit the manufacture or sale of guns...

“Criminals are going to get guns,” Kotowski said. “Why not limit the damage that they can cause?”

And you don't think they'll be able to get magazines, Dan?

Of course you do. This is just a lie to give your treason some cover.

How do we know he's really after the guns?
Kotowski also is sponsoring a ban on .50-caliber assault rifles which is awaiting a Senate floor vote.
In an interesting side development, Armed and Safe tells us the magazine ban was at the expense of a bill that addressed sexual exploitation of children.

You May Be a Gun Nut

So Hamline officials took swift action. On April 23, Scheffler received a letter informing him he'd been placed on interim suspension. To be considered for readmittance, he'd have to pay for a psychological evaluation and undergo any treatment deemed necessary, then meet with the dean of students, who would ultimately decide whether Scheffler was fit to return to the university.

And if the shrink is a hoplophobe along the lines of the vast majority of his colleagues in the American Psychological Association...?

It's clear the profession considers hoplophilia a mental disorder--creating a convenient little Catch-22.

Funny. The paranoids station an armed cop outside a classroom over this--and they call us nuts.

Under these circumstances, I don't think it's too far of a stretch to envision a scenario where a restraining order is issued, an evaluation ordered, and a biased practitioner categorizes the citizen a danger--all nice and legal.

I hope Scheffler sues the **** out of these fascists.

Joseph Child of the New York Train of Artillery tried at a late General Court Martial whereof Col. Huntington was President for "defrauding Christopher Stetson of a dollar, also for drinking Damnation to all Whigs, and Sons of Liberty, and for profane cursing and swearing." -- The Court finding the prisoner guilty of profane cursing and swearing and speaking contemptuously of the American Army, do sentence him to be drum'd out of the army.
