Groom Raider: The Windy City

According to "Boots" a Brangelina security guard had to pull a gun on what certainly sounds like a crazy fan while the gang is in Chicago watching Jolie work.

In Chicago? Where are Jesse and Snuffy when you really need them?

How does a person who's not a Daley, a cop (or an alderman) get away with armed protection in Chicago?

Particularly one who disapproves of guns?

A Crazed Right-Wing Militant Responds

Between the post-shoot steak dinner catered by a professional chef to the (legal) cannon and automatic weapon firing demonstrations, there was a concerted effort to help Zumbo understand that AR-15 shooters and hunters aren't crazed right-wing militants waiting for an apocalyptic one-world government takeover.

What are you trying to do, Brent Wheat, outzumbo Zumbo?

Why do you perpetuate the stereotype that prudent Americans taking personal protective measures because of real threats--internal and external--that could very well bring this nation to its knees, should be ridiculed as kooks?

Put another way:
[W]here in history is any civilization guaranteed stasis? Has not despotism and mass destruction plagued every civilization that preceded ours? Is it not, in fact, still commonplace throughout the globe? By what suspension of reality, by what denial of the observable and the probable, by what art, device or magic are we sheltered few immune from catastrophe? Are we certain, from our brief and privileged vantage point, that such things will ever remain headline curiosities? Is it not just plain stupid to proclaim that our familiar way of life will forever be the norm, when everything that has gone before us shows we are, instead, the extremely lucky beneficiaries of a rare and fortunate convergence of circumstances; and one, by the way, that has only been preserved under force of arms?

Brent, it seems you haven't figured out this hunter/sport shooter elitism won't fly with Americans who believe--without apology--that a militia of the whole people is the ultimate guarantor for "the security of a free state." Instead of helping bridge the gulf, your "ill-considered [viewpoint]" widens it--unless you think dispensing disparagement from above will endear chef-catered-to sport shooters to those who take preparedness seriously.

Yeah, I know you advise your readers to "[flex] their political muscle in support of the Second Amendment," but if anticipating and preparing for freedom-threatening catastrophes is something to be ridiculed, I'm not certain I understand why.

Advise and Consent

The gunman ordered children out of the sanctuary before opening fire, killing three people and wounding at least five others in the middle of a worship service. He held 25 to 50 people hostage before finally surrendering...The gunman surrendered to authorities after about 10 minutes of negotiation.

Looks like the coward wanted to live. So if men showing up with guns caused him to stop, what principle can we extrapolate?

The thing about guns in Missouri churches is:
[A] person is prohibited from bringing a concealed weapon on to the premises of a church or place of religious worship, unless the person has obtained the consent of the pastor, priest, or person or persons representing the religious organization that exercises control over the place of religious worship.

Looks like nobody got "permission".

This Day in History: August 13

We were not here above an hour until we went to view the lines where the English camp is all in plain sight. We crossed the lines, and went beyond the outposts to a small hill, within musket shot of a man-of-war and a floating battery, and not further from the works at the foot of Bunker Hill, where we could see them very plainly. Whilst I was standing there, some of our riflemen slipped down the hill, about a gunshot to the left of us and began firing.

BREAKING NEWS: GUN CONTROL LAWS AFFECT LAW-ABIDING!!!

The number of licensed gun owners in Massachusetts is falling.

In the past six years, gun licenses have dropped by 25 percent, a decline driven by more restrictive laws, higher fees and a gradual change in culture, according to law enforcement and gun owners.

Predictably:

Some in law enforcement are applauding the decline, but caution that there are still plenty of illegal guns on the streets.

No, duh. How ya doin' on decreasing those? Making any progress?

Chief Crowley (we've met this authoritarian spokesthing before) weighs in:

"The average citizen who has a gun 24-7 I don’t believe has the experience, knowledge and training to know when and if they should use a firearm."

No, of course not, Chief. They're not "Only Ones," with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men, like you.

The Path of Least Resistance

A 41-year-old man stormed a beauty salon and bludgeoned four grandmothers with a hammer, fracturing one's skull, before making off with less than $90, police said...The women, aged 56 to 76, did not resist but were beaten anyway...

So take a tip from Detective Kevin Coffey:
You've heard it before and now here it is again: Never resist if you are the victim of a robbery. Do exactly as you are told to do in order to minimize your chances of being injured and to speed the departure of your assailant before he gets other ideas. The assailant, in most cases, doesn't want to hang around much longer than you want him to...

He must know better than us, because:
Kevin is the media's favorite expert on travel safety and related topics. Most likely you recognize him from appearances on Oprah, 20/20, CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, The Travel Channel, Court TV, The Today Show or countless other broadcasts. He is regularly quoted in the written press, including: USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, Fortune, Inc., as well as in many trade publications.

No surprise this guy is the darling of the "authorized journalists," is it?

Too bad those grandmothers didn't heed his advice, though, because they did have access to "(HAIRSPRAY, KEYS, PURSE) as a weapon," but in fairness to media favorite Kevin, this wasn't a rape prevention situation. Still, why wouldn't he advise free people to train themselves to deploy the most effective means of personal defense known?

After all, he carries a sidearm.

Oh but I forget...he's an "Only One"...

I'm the Father of "The Only One"

Interesting excuse making.

Here's the post he should have commented on.

Dad seems to be focused on who rode the bull and that his son shot himself in the leg, not the foot. Fine--I have no problem accepting that version over the one reported by the "authorized journalists."

But funny: They've changed the story and deleted the quote I copied that was posted at that time on that link.

Still, the whole reason this was a story in the first place was due to the negligent discharge. And "The Only One" responsible for that is the negligent operator.

And I stand by my comment: If it had been you or me or anyone not connected to the local LE establishment negligently discharging a firearm in a public place that serves alcohol, I have no doubt we'd have been arrested and charged.

And justifiably so.

New Trial Ordered for Kwan

Per Len Savage:

Found buried in todays edition of Seattle Times...
Don't think you got redirected to the wrong page if the headline you see involves a decapitated snake (and why that guy didn't just call in the Noble, OK PD for professional snake dispatching is beyond me). No, you need to scroll down through "Local News" to the next story to find:
A federal judge has granted a new trial to Albert K. Kwan, a Bellevue gun collector who was found guilty of illegally possessing a short-barrel rifle after a three-day jury trial in June.
Imagine that: the jury wasn't told parts need to be connected to make a whole. And while I see nothing about Kwan's acquittal on machine gun possession charges, I do see plenty of innuendo suggesting he's a shady character somehow involved in murder--that and a liar.

That goes with being an "authorized journalist," I guess. But funny--when Kwan was convicted, they had no problem reporting it not once, but twice. And again with all that nasty innuendo.

And what has Mr. Kwan been evidently wrongfully convicted of?

Investigators who searched his home...seized several weapons, including...a Heckler and Koch pistol that could be attached to a shoulder stock, making it a short-barreled rifle.
If that's all it takes, I might be guilty, too. I could take the stock off one of my rifles. I'm sure I have some bolts and a clamp somewhere in the garage I could use to attach it to one of my pistols--it wouldn't be very pretty, and I wouldn't want to use something so poorly modified, but it would certainly seem to meet the government litmus test.

I guess a government with unlimited resources can afford to throw them at anyone it sets its mind to. And if you anger the beast, it will set its mind to bringing you down.

New and Improved

Jeffersonian suggests the following "product improvement for the Only Ones":

Perhaps, but I do see a potential legal problem. Just as I pointed out several years back in "Smart Guns-Dumb Lawsuits":
...they would still be deemed negligent for not including such warnings in Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese and Tagalog.
I mean, our diversity is our strength. Right?

Considering Kennesaw

GeorgiaCarry.org President Ed Stone said he is pleased to see Kennesaw take steps to change its ordinance, but said the organization would pursue legal action if the city failed to act.

Here's more information on a story WarOnGuns talked about a couple days ago.

This Day in History: August 12

The court martial of George Washington's second-in-command at a crucial stage in the War of Independence was the culmination of a tense relationship between the two men and ended General Charles Lee's military career.

My Kind of Gals

They sure make our Million Mommy types look pathetic, don't they? Even the women members.

Book Learnin'

"If the kid has a backpack next to them, or under the desk, they can pick it up, the straps act as a handle and it becomes a shield," Curran said.

It's much lighter than a 15-pound police vest. After three years of experimenting, the backpacks that were tested by an outside lab ranked threat level two. It stops an assortment of bullets, including 9-millimeter hollow point bullets.

It'll also give the assailant a nice target to aim at center mass. Besides, guess what else will stop "an assortment of bullets, including 9-millimeter hollow point bullets"?

How about just an ordinary backpack that doesn't cost $175 full of...uh... books?

But I wouldn't recommend betting my child's life on that. What would I recommend?

Oh, gee, I don't know.

Besides, Wayne doesn't like the idea.

Just So We're Clear on How This Works

...Carranza, who has a fake Social Security number, had been arrested on charges of raping a 5-year-old girl and then threatening the child and her parents. In that case he faced a 31-count indictment.

In another, he was arrested on assault charges stemming from a bar fight.

Immigration officials apparently were aware of Carranza's illegal status since his prior arrests, according to Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura.

The solution, of course, to prevent such execution-style killings by known illegal immigrants is to disarm American Citizens.

Take San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom (please!), who is trying to shut down the gun show at the Cow Palace (it's not even in his jurisdiction), while declaring San Francisco a "Sanctuary City" for the likes of Mr. Carranza.

As we've seen before, this despicable, out-of-control reprobate just ignores laws he objects to, but will not tolerate even the hint of defiance for one of his edicts.

That is the very definition of rule of man, the very definition of tyranny.

We're the Only Ones Permissive Enough

[I used BugMeNot to bypass site registration]
The FBI is looking into concealed-gun permits issued by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, according to documents filed in a lawsuit that alleges former Sheriff Lou Blanas issued permits as political favors....The lawsuit, filed in December 2003 when Blanas was sheriff, alleges that Blanas denied David Mehl, a chemical engineer, and Lok T. Lau, a retired FBI agent, equal protection under the law when his office turned down their applications for gun-carry permits.

Gee, you don't suppose having one of their own get denied was what prompted this. do you? I mean, it's not like this hasn't been SOP for California Sheriff and Police departments...

All animals deserve equal protection, but some animals deserve more equal protection than others.

Nuge to Red's: You're on Your Own

"At this time, it does not appear that Ted's schedule will permit."

Yeah, 10 minutes of the Great Man's time is a lot to ask for.

The guy's in Boise, making untold profits off a fan base that includes untold thousands of gun owners and he can't be bothered?

Ryan has been trying to work with "his people," so he knows about the situation at Red's Trading Post. Evidently he doesn't want to involve his name in the controversy. Because if he wanted to, he could point Ryan out in the audience.

Ryan says "the positive side is I still get to see Ted in concert."

If it was me, I wouldn't go.

"What Better Person..."

...to explain to you how to make one of these videos than someone who knows absolutely nothing about technology?

Yeah, like firearms technology, seeing as how you Brady Luddites want to ban those employing designs that were developed in the same period as the light bulb.

Lewis Black adds his peculiar brand of acting like a smug urban smart ass while remaining typically unfunny in this latest Brady Campaign propaganda foray. He invites us to submit our own videos and "Tell us what you feel" (significantly, not "what you know"), and the thought strikes that we could do a repeat of the Million Moon March--except I fear the effort would be wasted and they'd never show critical viewpoints.

Pity, because the one I had in mind involves a look-alike of Black sitting at an identical set, going into his whiny rant when suddenly...well, let's just say it involves ski masks, rubber gloves and a meat fork, and he's powerless to stop it.

Hey--it's funnier than what he's doing, and he's a professional comic.

Years ago, I did a video called "Minute Men." We were at a gun rights rally in Sacramento, CA, and I set up a camera on a tripod and gave attendees (who signed a release) one minute to speak their mind on the right to keep and bear arms. I still have the tape and really ought to get it converted to digital format, edit it and post it online. All I need is the time to teach myself to do all that.

Guest Editorial: Liberty is Risky

By Charles H. Sawders

In a free society potential behavior cannot be punished. To the extent that it is, is the measure of the absence of liberty.

Unacceptable behavior proscribed by law, may be punished. But in a free society what one might, maybe, could, possibly, perhaps, be able to do is not grounds for punishment or truncation of rights. Only after the unacceptable behavior has occurred can a free society protect itself by punishing the actor, both as retribution and deterrence. Any punishment or restriction prior is a veto of liberty.

Liberty is risky. We must rely on the good natures of our fellow citizens to a large extent. Though risky, it has proven throughout history to be much safer than entrusting ourselves to the good natures of governments.

Those unwilling to risk liberty can always find a master. If that be their desire, I will not strive to prevent such, so long as they seek subservience and servitude on a personal level. They are not empowered to seek either, nor a master, for me. When they venture to do so they have become my enemy. An enemy who will not be tolerated. An enemy who will be counted among the forces of evil by free men everywhere.

The Downsides of Liberty

This Day in History: August 11

Under the present Situation of Affairs, I can give you no better direction than to remain at your post and collect all the force that you possibly can, the Season of the Year is to be sure inconvenient for the Militia to be out, but the necessity of the Case requires that as many as possibly can, must be retained in service, for if Genl. Burgoyne persists in his advance upon our Northern Army, we must offer them support or suffer him to make himself Master of all the Country above.
