Basic Economics

To expect the government to prevent such fraud from ever occurring would be like wanting it to provide cushions for all the children who might fall...

It means forgetting that the execution of these regulations is always entrusted to men who may have all the more interest in fraud or in conniving at fraud since the fraud which they might commit would be covered in some way by the seal of public authority... [More]
See, if this guy were running for public office today, he'd be dismissed as unelectable. A candidate with no principles but better chances would be the one everyone but a few would get behind, and they would be ridiculed and dismissed with contempt as "Turgbots."

Hey, just keeping tabs on the livestock. And wait 'til Wisconsin Tommy starts implanting these in your forehead.

Besides, if you're not doing anything wrong, what have you got to hide?

And if you can't trust Wisconsin "Only Ones," who can you trust?

Misinterpreting the Assignment

District 70 Superintendent Dr. Dan Lere said students may have misinterpreted the assignment.

He says if a student, “actually did illustrate an act of terrorism that they might commit, let’s say against the school, we’ve expelled students for that.”[More]
And the fact that your guy set them up for exactly that would count how much, Dr. Dan?

Funny how when they become the subject of hypotheticals some people get all jittery...

Truth is, it's actually a valid assignment, and could produce some interesting ideas/provoke some interesting discussion. That is, if the intent is not to produce a population that depends on others to "protect" the herd.

That Scribd is pretty neat. Yeah, I know, the youngsters are slapping their foreheads at the fossil. Let me share with you what my high school graduation present from my parents was--a portable manual typewriter.

I have in my life coded assembly parts lists with a #2 pencil using 80 column forms--putting in part numbers, descriptions, quantities, subassembly nomenclatures, engineering changes notice numbers etc., and then taking the batched forms down to a department called "Keypunch."

Like we used to say at the end of the shift as we slid down the brontosarus neck: "Yabba-dabba-doo!"

Does ATF Want Seized Property Notices Noticed?

Had they wanted to, ATF could have made this available on the Internet in a matter of minutes and then put out a press release. And they could have done it with all the bells and whistles--a nice user-friendly searchable file...had they wanted to. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner gives you what your government will not: An online listing of the seized firearms we discussed here last Friday.

Most gun owners don't even know about this--and that seems intentional. BATFU is doing the bare minimum to comply.

This information appears nowhere else--for now. Please help change that and spread the GRE link far and wide.

Happy Mothers Day

I'm off to the store, to make one of those special dinners a guy like me had to know how to cook up in order to get dates back in my single days. Bone-in rib roast with this Amish horseradish I buy typically works real well on occasions like this, where you want to show Sweetie she's appreciated. Add some red potatoes, carrots, parsnips and mushrooms, and then my special Swiss cheese bread...I'd better get busy.

Done blogging for today. Later tonight I have some scanning to do--that library trip I mentioned yesterday paid off. Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I should have an exclusive tomorrow on Gun Rights Examiner.

This is a Job...for Oath Keepers

"Suggesting that our troops would attack the leaders of the very democracy they've sworn to sacrifice their lives for is an insult to their integrity, honor, and professionalism." [More]
When we see this kind of blatant misdirection happening, let's all take a moment when we can to correct the record. Here's my comment (177):
"Suggesting that our troops would attack the leaders of the very democracy they've sworn to sacrifice their lives for is an insult to their integrity, honor, and professionalism."

Media Matters seems not to understand that accuracy matters. That oath is not to "sacrifice their lives" for "democracy," but to "support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic."

Big difference.

Google "Oath Keepers."

By promulgating that deception, Eric Burns is an insult to what is supposed to have been a watchdog, not a lapdog press.

A Plea for Understanding

Folks, I'm working my tail off. I even have to go to the library today to do some research. I have two book reviews in the queue (meaning I have to find the time to read them first), a ton of marketing effort to do for my column, and literally hundreds of emails I process every day--I read them all and try to reply when I can, although of late I must apologize for not being able to.

In short, I am forced to make a decision between:
a. Working on the priorities on my overflowing plate
b. Processing and responding to every news tip I get (many of which are repeats)
c. Having a life, which includes a wife, two sons and a yard and house screaming for attention, not to mention my other professional commitments.

Please, please understand if I don't feature your tip or even reply. It does not mean I don't appreciate your interest, and I apologize if you think it's rude.

There is only one of me, and I'm doing the best that I can. I don't even plan to post on WarOnGuns any more today because of that afore-mentioned library trip, which I hope will result in a pay-off I can share with you soon.

Thank you in advance for understanding and not attributing non-responsiveness to not caring.

Oh, and if you do understand and want to help, share my Examiner column links. Page views help keep meager gruel in feral sons Uday and Qusay's bowls. I've heard some intentionally won't link to my GRE columns because of that.

Rep. Peter King Plots Terrorist Act

Here's what I get from King's bill: They will be able to put a person's name on their "prohibited" list using redacted documents that can be withheld from the victims under the guise that releasing the information compromises national security. They will be able to do this without having convicted that person of a thing in a court of law--the accusation is enough.

At least the Salem witches got a trial, could face their accusers, and hear all the "evidence" against them.

This is intended as an in-your-face threat against activist gun owners, a way to chill their agitation, and ultimately a way to prohibit them from "legal" gun ownership. And they'll get to the less active ones next. [More]
These evil sons of bitches have drafted a declaration of war.

I am afraid we shall never be able to find places vacant, equal to the expectations of the french Gentlemen who are now here, much less for those that will follow. The high Rank conferred upon those who first came over, many of whom had no pretensions either from their Services or Merit, has naturally raised the expectations of those who come properly recommended, to such a pitch, that I know not what will satisfy them. Not Trying Very Hard

Per JH:
If you haven't seen it, BATF posted thousands of seized weapons in a three page public paid notice in yesterday's Wall Street Journal to the public to retrieve their stolen weapons or they will be destroyed. Since most people don't get the WSJ and there was no copy of this on the electronic version of the WSJ, just how do people access the information? Why did BATF pick a newspaper with limited circulation and not say, USA Today for this paid public announcement? Maybe they did but I didn't hear about it.

Title of the announcement starting on page B8 is as follows:

Heading:
DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE-BUREAU OF ALCOHOL, FIREARMS, TOBACCO AND EXPLOSIVES (ATF)
Next line:
SEIZED PROPERTY NOTICES

This notice utilized pages B8, B9 and B10 in very small type.
So why wouldn't BATFU post this on its website?

You'd think a "gun lobby" worth its salt would get a friendly congressthing to introduce a bill requiring it.

We're the Only Ones Unprotected Enough

Los Angeles County coroner's investigators, often among the first to arrive at crime scenes, are seeking permission to carry weapons while on the job.

"We're working in one of the most dangerous areas in the nation," said Mario Sainz, a veteran investigator who has been lobbying the county to change its policy. "We've had incidents where the gangbangers -- even though there are uniformed cops -- drive by the scene, randomly shooting, and the coroner's investigator has no means of protection." [More]
Fair enough, Mario. But as WarOnGuns Correspondent W-3, who sent me this observes:
I wonder if the coroners have given any thought to the citizens living in the areas where the coroners are occasionally called to conduct an investigation? Those residents live in, “one of the most dangerous areas in the nation” 24/7, and are expected by the state to do so unarmed.
So are you "lobbying" for them as well? Or do you expect to be Super Mario, that is, an "Only One"?
