Still on Limited Schedule

I have a house full of relatives and all kinds of plans for today. I had time for today's GRE and that's it.

Letter Challenging Depp Machine Gun Story has Holes in It

Still, it's a good thing to have a famous person admit interest in shooting and teaching firearms handling to his children.

Except Rick Hacker of Beverly Hills questions Depp's recollection...[More]

Independence Requires the Will and Means to Preserve It

We are heirs of liberty. Terrible sacrifices were made to make it so. Terrible sacrifices may be required of us to keep it. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column looks at what we are supposed to be celebrating and guarding.

Also get the latest from my fellow GREs, including some highlighted Independence Day commentaries.

Hey, I'm hosting a big family gathering at my place this afternoon and evening--so I have a lot of work to do, and it doesn't involve being on the Internet.

Lord willing, I'll be back tomorrow. Enjoy your day, but don't forget to reflect on its meaning. Thus, today's column...

We're the Only Ones Waffling Enough

A Waffle House employee is suing the Gwinnett County Police Department over what he says was an unprovoked encounter with an officer who stunned him with a Taser. [More]
What is it about rooty tooty fresh and shooty "Only Ones"?

Hoka Hey and Garry Owen

IMHO, we could use some commanders now like Custer and Miles. And for that matter some like Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. Men of honor who keep their oaths. [More]
Mike H points out some inconsistencies in the Custer legend. Has history unfairly smeared him?

I don't pretend to know, but nevertheless, this is an engaging read.

"The Defective Bill is Absurd"

Handgun sales and purchases by New Jersey Retail Dealers are going to virtually end after November 2009. This is because the New Jersey legislature hurriedly passed the so-called “One Gun a Month” bill (A339), which was known to be seriously flawed. The defective bill is absurd, as it address a non-existent problem. No self-respecting gun trafficker would obtain their handguns by first applying for New Jersey Handguns Permits, paying over $50 in fees, and insuring that any handgun he sells on the street was papered to him! Notwithstanding just how idiotic the law is, it awaits the Governor Corzine’s signature and there is no reason to believe he will veto it. [More]
Evan Nappen analyzes the latest outrage in New Jersey.

New Orleans Still Illegally Confiscating Guns

With all due respect, Mr. DA, and it appears very little is due, that's not your call. As an officer of the court, sworn to uphold the law, you don't get to disregard it, or to make up edicts of your own.

This is the kind of authoritarian mentality that leads to "terror watch list" gun bans, to prior restraints, and to "no rights" lists where suspicion trumps all. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column identifies an official who has stolen a citizen's gun--under color of authority. SOP for The Big Easy, right?

This Day in History: July 3

This print shows the fight on July 3, 1777 between Patriot militia and Loyalist troops supported by Indian allies in the Wyoming Valley in northern Pennsylvania. After a brief but fierce battle, the militia troops fled, only to be pursed, especially by the Indians, who killed and tortured those they could catch. This "massacre" became a rallying point for Patriots leading to retaliation in the Sullivan-Clinton campaign against the Iroquois in 1779. [More]

Slow Going Ahead

Just said goodbye to one set of out-of-state relatives on Monday and another set arrived this morning. Plus I have a Guns Magazine article due. And three books in the queue for reviews. And the Gun Rights Examiner column.

WoG posting will probably be limited until next week. Please understand if I do not respond to or post tips from emails.

In the mean time, if you're looking for something to do, head on over to my GRE pages and entertain yourself with my new troll. He promises to have me arrested!

As Long as We're Scrutinizing...

The Vatican is quietly conducting two sweeping investigations of American nuns, a development that has startled and dismayed nuns who fear they are the targets of a doctrinal inquisition. [More]
I don't suppose you guys have a couple minutes to devote to Snuffy...?

We're the Only Ones Targeted Enough

He was referring to the voluntary training session, in which officers took turns standing next to a target while another officer, a football field away, took aim and fired...

County officials also were concerned that when they tried to look at recordings from the surveillance cameras at the shooting range, they discovered that the cameras had been turned toward the sky or disconnected. They also had been told about an instance in which two officers were seen firing at the berm that separates two parts of the shooting range. [More]
Range safety, "Only Ones"-style...

And nice touch with the cameras.

Down at the Sunset Grill

A well-known Nashville restaurant and bar owner plans to sue today to stop the state's new guns-in-bars law from taking effect later this month. [More]
Just make sure all gun owners know what Randy Rayburn thinks of them, and reward him accordingly.

Maybe he'll get a sign like the one at Dukes...

An Attempt at Snark

Here's all you need to know:
David Martin lives in Ottawa, Canada [More]
Fortunately, these fine people prove the human quest for freedom is not so easily snuffed out.

And speaking of guns in churches (hey, I include links for a reason), everybody's seen this, right?

We're the Only Ones "Sexy Time!" Enough

Perry Township Police Chief Timothy Escola resigned this week after a tipster called and said the Chief was having sexy time in his police cruiser with a part-time police officer. [More]
Isn't that romantic? And having a prisoner in the back seat must have heightened their passion to levels only an "Only One" can ever know.

Celebrating Our Independence BATFU-Style

The public is urged to report illegal sales of professional-grade fireworks or other explosive devices such as M-80s to their local police department and to ATF by calling 1-888-ATF-BOMB, or 1-888-283-2662. Callers can remain anonymous. [More]
Thanks, BATFU! Yeah, that's GOTTA be what the Founders had in mind to celebrate our Independence.

Right Mr. Adams
?
It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.
Never mind.

We're the Only Ones with a Blank Stare Enough

A Collin County judge at a training exercise got a very real shot in the face. The shot came from a gun loaded with blanks, but the damage was nearly blinding.

The exercise Saturday involved Collin County sheriff deputies, court staff and McKinney police. [More]
But he was blinded by the light....

"Only Ones"-style.

Government Dismisses Charge Against Gun Owner

So where does this leave us? After years of harassment, including holding him for 23 days, confiscating his property, ordering him not to possess firearms, forcing him to surrender his passport and to post a $250,000 bond, and spending--exactly how much in legal costs for both sides?--the government simply files a motion to dismiss the indictment?

And that's supposed to be it? [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column brings you news on a case that been ongoing for years. The feds tried to destroy this guy and now they drop an indictment without a word of explanation. And after having demonized him, the media is completely AWOL on bringing this conclusion to our attention.

This Day in History: July 2

July 2, 1777 at Fort Ticonderoga, New York - On July 2, at 3:00 P.M., the advanced elements of Brig. Gen. Simon Fraser's light infantry began sniping at the American position. This provoked a furious series of volleys. When the smoke cleared, no one had been injured on either side. Brig. Gen. Baron von Riedesel pushed forward to the marshy banks of Eagle Creek at the foot of Mount Independence. Here, his men came under fire from American batteries on the heights. This engagement ended in an indecisive conclusion. Conclusion: Draw [More]
