This Day in History: October 11

Continuing his pattern of disparaging his commanding officers, Thomas Conway sends Gates a letter suggesting that Washington should be relieved of his duties as commander-in-chief and Gates should be appointed as his replacement. [More]

Why Won't Press Question Bloomberg Gun Show Motives?

This strikes no one as... creepy? This sounds like someone who should be commanding a monopoly of armed force?

Forgive some of us if we suspect all the pots and pans Bloomberg is banging over out-of-state gun shows is more a matter of generating tons of free publicity, stoking his insufferable ego and imposing his will on all American gun owners, and less about combating violent crime in the Big Apple. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column challenges the adage that there are no stupid questions. There are, however, plenty of useful idiots in the establishment media.

This Day in History: October 10

October 10, 1777 at Fort Mifflin, Pennsylvania - Fort Mifflin was an American fort that covered one end of a band of obstructions across the Delaware River. It was garrisoned by 450 men. The fort was located ooposite of Fort Mercer on Port Island, between Hog Island and Mud Island. The fort was known to have been poorly engineered. On October 10, the British forces on nearby Province Island began a bombardment against the weak, land side of the fort. The bombardment lasted for about 2 weeks. [More]

Hain Shooting on Webcam Points to Parole Officer Husband as Killer

While some anti-gun zealots are hard at work blaming the domestic violence victim, or extrapolating that this one incident proves guns are always useless for defense, those decrying armed defense and using this to justify their position need to explain a gross inconsistency. [More]
This development called for a second Gun Rights Examiner column today.

Not Necessarily a Policy Violation

Students and faculty at UCLA are stunned following a horrific attack in a campus chemistry lab in which a male student allegedly slashed the throat of a female student. [More]
Hey, as long as the blade was under 2½" I don't see what the problem could be...

On Wings of Eagles

I'd like to share something I did last weekend. All pictures will enlarge when clicked.

The glider waits to be...

...stuffed with precious cargo...we'll worry about prying it out later.

Sealed in--too late to escape, at least with any pride...

The towplane strains to get aloft under the mighty load.

I think I can, I think I can...

Aloft and free. That reservoir is here. Click on map view and you'll see the airfield to the east.

Nice finger, idiot.

The return approach...easy...easy...

The turk..uh...eagle has landed.

What fun. Thanks, Bruce! If you only knew half the things I was guilty of doing to you back in college, you'd have come back solo!

We're the Only Ones Objectively Reasonable Enough

Chief Locke thrust his knee between [Diane's] legs, and while Diane was still leaning on the hood of the patrol car, Chief Locke began to paw and stroke her, beginning at Diane’s waist and moving down to her buttocks [More]
And it's not the first time!
A couple of months before Cook, Locke was sued for sexual misconduct involving another woman...
So what's proper "Only One" protocol when Diane's husband objected?
Michael took one step toward Chief Locke. Chief Locke told Michael to “[g]et back in the fucking car” and, at the same time, Chief Locke tasered Michael. Michael never saw the taser.
So what could a court decide except:
In evaluating Appellees’ motion for summary judgment, the district court concluded, “[Chief] Locke’s conduct, in tasering and causing Michael’s head to strike the subject vehicles, [was] objectively reasonable as a matter of law.”
Everybody knows their place, right?

So, gee, if we can't get justice from the courts, what's left that would be objectively reasonable?

We're the Only Ones Not Doing Anything Different Enough

A police officer shot a woman and the dog she was playing with when the officer thought the dog was attacking the woman... [More]
And then we have Dennis Wallace:
I can't say that I would do anything different.
A major point being, Dennis, do you think the "Only Ones" would have done anything different if it was you who did the shooting...?

[Via William T]

We're the Only Ones In Service Enough

From Mike H:
Can't substantiate except I heard the guy myself.

Quote from a Major on IMPD: "We get paid to service the law, not to get hurt."
And who pays the "Only Ones" to do this?

And it's worth it to us....why, exactly?

How to Lose Friends

Open carry in an urban setting, when you have some realistic alternative available (such as concealed carry), is rather like a homosexual "kiss-in." [More]
Great title!

We're the Only Ones Holding the Phone Enough

A lawyer for the widow and minor son of the man who was fatally shot Oct. 2 by Bossier City police says his investigation has turned up a witness who claims the man did not reach for the officer's weapon. [More]
But hold the phone:
"It's a tragic, tragic event," the police chief said during the news conference. "But it appears the officers followed all procedures that they could.
I mean literally, hold the phone:
The deaf woman Richey interviewed also took a photo with her cell phone, which was confiscated by police, the lawyer said.
Proper "Only One" protocols, you see. Besides, taking the phone was probably just a matter of making sure they can remember everything properly.

Sheriff Hosting Rifle Training Shows Proper Mindset Toward Gun Owners

This is a great start, and, if you think about it, the way things ought to be. Compare this to the mindset of some that the proper interaction between police and armed citizens should be through snitch programs and gun "buybacks." [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column looks at something we ought to be encouraging a lot more of.

Fight At Fenger While Officials Discuss Violence [More]
My favorite "No Child Left Behind" moment:
"They was fighting," one girl said.
Forget it, Jake, it's Chi-Town.

The City Has No Say

We talked about Steve Lynes' letter in The Lompoc Record challenging the militarization of police and the procurement of suppressors for their rifles.

He wrote to his local representatives, including the mayor and councilmembers. One, Bob Lingl, has seen fit to respond to date. Here's the position he staked out:
If I recall the article correctly, it is not the city the is buying these items for the police department but instead a private, civilian foundation. I might agree with you if it were the city buying them, but if a private foundation wants to buy them I don't see where the city should have any say.
Really? Elected representatives of the people are properly out of the loop on what's deployed against their constituents? If a private entity wants to do--whatever--for the police, the city will have no say?

I found a website that lists all the escort services in Lompoc. So I guess if I want to pay to send a lap dancer over to entertain Chief Dabney--assuming he's OK with it-- that'll be just fine with the City Fathers?

The Latest Proposal

According to the latest proposals contained in the National Policy on Small Arms and Light Weapons, no one will be allowed to own an AK-47 rifle, a G3 or “any automatic or semi-automatic self-loading military assault rifle of any other calibre”.

Anyone found guilty of having one will be hanged. [More]
And in typical Orwellian fashion:
The proposals were prepared by the National Steering Committee on Peace Building and Conflict Management...
What is this, the shape of things to come?

So: If you were a Kenyan who believed in freedom, what would you do if the "Only Ones" came for you or your friends or loved ones?

Tragic Statistics Avoided in New Hampshire

A devout Mormon on the verge of becoming a church missionary helped lead a group of machete-toting teens accused of butchering a nurse in her bed and slashing her 11-year-old daughter’s throat in what officials say was a sadistic pact to attack at random. [More]
Thank goodness the woman didn't have a firearm--otherwise, we might be reading about more "child gun deaths," and what could be more tragic than that?

A Family Atmosphere

"This is supposed to be a family atmosphere," said an IPC employee, who asked to remain anonymous. "We got no problem with them coming in. We just don't want them carrying guns. I mean, we don't live in the Wild West, man." [More]
Sounds like just the kind of informed opinion I want making decisions about my safety.

It also sounds like a perfect business opportunity for a restaurateur who's not an idiot to create an atmosphere that respects our right to protect our families.

Does Hain Shooting Show Citizens Can't be Trusted with Guns?

So the "pistol-packin' soccer mom" was not the shooter? Meaning neighbor Debbie Mise's I-told-you-so "she just wasn't right" hoplophobia may not have made her the predictor of events she seemingly claims to be? Meaning...what exactly... about comment posters taking swipes at all gun owners over this? [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column looks at an unfolding story that has resulted in the all-too-predictable disparagement of those who believe in the right to bear as well as keep arms.
