Word, G

A quarrel over a rap performance between the rivaling “Hit Squad” and “Southside Mafia” led up to the park gunfight about a week later that killed 4-year-old Travon Wilson...
See? SEE?

This is why we need "gun control"!

This is why we need to disarm you and me!

That's basically the Brady argument, you know.

  1. Sometimes we as African Americans should do our own investigating before we allow the media to control what we believe about our own young men and women. You are absolutly right about gun violence, but please understand that what happened in Riverdale Park was not the work of "Gangs" as plastered all over the news and news papers, but one or two irresponisble young men. If you look back in history as far as it was written you will find a number of articles that slander blacks and convince society that we are animals. The best way to prevent gun violence in our community is to band together and teach of young men and women. We should band together as a community and protect them not attack them as the media would like. After all, like it or not they are our future and without them there is no us.

  2. I partially agree, anon, but I don't have "The Community" raising my kids--my wife and I do that, and try to keep "society's" influence on them as minimized as practical.

The major problem facing the black community today is the absence of a responsible father in too large a percentage of homes. Couple that with social programs that result in the generational trap of government dependence and addiction, and you have the formula for a group of people self destructing.

The only solution for the future for all of us, regardless of race, that I can see is freedom.

  3. The biggest mistake that most parents make is believing they don't need the community to assist in raising their children. I am an educator and I see the same thing everyday, shocked parents who don't believe their children are some of the things they are doing. The first thing that comes out of parents mouths is we didn't raise him/her that way. The truth is children are more influenced by the environment around them, their friends, tv, radio, etc. And to be honest that is an old wives tale that fatherless children are more at risk than children that come from a stable home. If you research the vast majority of successful individuals in the afican american community come from single parent homes. The way we as adults can help these children and stop gun violence is to get more involved with our children and other children in the community, their friends. As you stated you and your wife raise your children, imagine if you just offered a small portion of the love and friendship that you give your children to another child, you have no idea what a big difference you could make in the childs life as well as insure a positive peer for your child. In today's society we have become so selfish and we have the attitude that if it's not in our home it doesn't matter but in fact it does. You could not only save the life of that child but you may have even prevented future victims of violent crimes by that child.
