It's Not That Big a Deal

If people keep guns for self-defence, all that means is that burglars and so on carry guns as well. So someone who just wants to knock your house off for a heroin fix suddenly gets in a position where they might have to kill you, or be killed themselves. No-one who invades your home is going to want to add a murder rap unless they have to. I've been burgled, and really, it's not that big a deal. You just buy new stuff on insurance.

I wasn't going to post this initially because I didn't want to drive traffic to this unctuous fool's site, but you really do need to see what passes for a man in some Australian circles these days.

And judging by the comments, his readers agree with him.

  1. Well, you're talking about Australia, David. All the men down under have been neutered! ;o)

  2. And the 85 million who didn't do evil at some school or elsewhere? Yeah, let's punish them for someone else's filthy behavior. Dominick, the pussy who wrote this article, also makes plenty of references to the "lack" of manly attributes of most gun owners, and their posession of guns making up for it. Love that one. Yellow cowardly carping socialists. Is there anything they don't know or can't put their mouth on?

  3. There USED to be a big crime problem in my neighborhood, when I first moved in. Sat outside with a 12 ga. across my lap, and sometimes my .44 in a shoulder holster. Just watched people closely, hardly saying a word, unless someone got real out of line. Did this for a number of months. With each passing day the problem diminished.

When it appears the problems are raising their ugly head again. Just start making an armed appearance, and it quickly subsides. Word gets out on the streets, and soon they find another neighborhood to infest. The vermin, almost without exeption, always choose the path of least resistance.

  4. p.s. - the same as above would work in Australia as well. What has happened with those people? They were at one time reputed as being pretty tough, and not ones to mess with.

Wonder if it has anything to do with their perverse GUN CONTROL laws? YOU THINK?

  5. I sent this:

The death of these children is tragic beyond words. How some of the commenters here could make light of it is disgusting.

To those that imply that if guns were illegal this would not have happened, I reply violent predators such as the piece of filth that committed these crimes have no compunction against breaking the law, including those against owning weapons.

The simple truth is that evil exists. Violent criminals exist. A firearm and the skill and will to use it is the most effective means of defense that a person can have to protect themselves from violent criminal predation. Unless you believe like the author

"No-one who invades your home is going to want to add a murder rap unless they have to. I've been burgled, and really, it's not that big a deal."

Blaming the victim for the violent choices of criminals is despicable.

  6. You sure have an impressive selection of astute readers over here, Sir!

But why would I be surprised? ...they are informed and educated, responsible firearms owners. Each time I have the pleasure to introduce an individual to the shooting sports and rigors of proper firearms handling, I precede the conversation with:

"You are about to find that firearms owners are amongst some of the most cordial, realistic and informed people that you have ever had the pleasure of meeting. They are almost always polite, helpful and eager to share their wealth of information with a novice for the betterment of the individual and the hobby."

  8. As an Australian, maybe I should take offence at some of the comments here (r.j. call your office), but as a shooter, I can't see myself doing that (grin).

The writer is a prat, and we all know it. He's not necessarily a leftist or socialist, but definitely an idiot.

I too have been burgled, and it IS a big deal. I have faced would-be home invaders, and I can tell you a 12-gauge is VERY effective deterrent. I am reminded of a comment attributed to Col. Cooper (and I paraphrase): "You say 'violence begets violence': I say that was always my intention, to have the sociopath's violence beget more violence in return than he can handle."

Not ALL Australian men have been neutered, but a LOT have been blinded to the truth.

  9. Welcome, anon--please note I was careful to say "in some circles"--I have no doubt Australia still retains its share of great patriots and true men and women.

I share your misfortune of being tarred with a broad brush--I can't tell you how many times I've seen gun owners react to a proposed California gun law by wishing our state to fall into the ocean--and have reminded people on numerous occasions that some of us out here are living on the front lines--what gets past us will be heading their way.

  10. I just can't get past the comments on this blog. Are these typical examples of Australians? In my limited experience, NO. But, I haven't met more than 5 or 6 Aussies and that was while in Japan. All of them sure weren't of this ilk, but maybe they were the minority. The Aussies posting on this blog are some of the stupidest, uneducated, arrogant, smug and immature people I have ever come across.

  11. Say Bill, does that make them like ... ummm ... Democrats?

As an Australian, (see my first post as "Anonymous" above), if I sat out front with a firearm visible, I'd be locked up in short order.

The laws here are insidious, iniquitous and evil, but they ARE the law. Although I would use ANY force available to defend myself and my family from actual attack, depriving my family of income and protection by going to gaol over posturing is NOT something I am prepared to contemplate.

This is a point that many seem to miss in the debate about complying with evil (read unconstitutional) laws - the state has MANY weapons in the fight to crush the individual. Almost NONE of them involve firearms directly, and ALL have immense collateral damage to loved ones.

  12. Sendarius,

I hope you know that I was talking about the Aussies on this Dominic due's blog, not the ones here at War on Guns. As I posted, the Aussies I've met in my travels were some of the nicest, friendliest down to earth people I've ever come across and I enjoyed every minute I spent with them. Whether we were in a bar or on the beach, these guys were great. I do have a question for you though, are these idiots on Dominick's blog typical of Australians or are they the lunatic fringe? I hope the latter rather the the former. And yes, it not only makes them like demonrats, it makes them akin to all politicians, the very worst of the worst.

  13. Yes, Bill, I DO know that the comments here (yours included) were directed at the posters on that other (not-to-be-named) site, but thanks for making it clear.

My assessment of the posters there is that they are on or beyond the lunatic fringe. You know the type I mean, totally unable to accept logic or reason because it clashes with their cherished self-image and the beliefs that they have adopted.

As a shooter, I probably move in a circle of people that is self-selected to be polite, tolerant, reasoned, and logical, but even there I meet a number of people that would probably feel right at home in that group of posters.

In general, Australians have been educated to fear guns and gun-owners. Most have NO idea of the laws and restrictions in place, and are mostly convinced that only the police should resist crime and criminals. One co-worker said that she couldn't imagine shooting an attacker, EVEN IF SHE KNEW HE WAS GOING TO KILL HER.

I don't often get far with my argument that society delegates the fight against crime to the police, but "delegate" does not mean "surrender". Occasionally I have a win though, and most of my neighbours know and agree with my stance that we have the right AND THE OBLIGATION to resist evil-doers. (Just ask the moron who tried to steal my car while I was watching him, then attacked me when I challenged him. That is, ask him when they unwire his jaw.)

To get back to your question: that mob is the crazy fringe in large part, and most of the rest of the country is either brain-washed to think guns are evil, or is smart enough to know better. I just don't know the numbers in each camp.

  14. Sendarius thanks for clearing that up, my faith in Australians ahs been restored. We have people here in the US that are just as rabid as those on the other board, they are in the minority here though. I think most Americans believe in the right to bear arms, however, most think "reasonable" restrictions are fine. Those of us here with David seem to be in the minority as we believe in the literal meaning of the 2nd A, Shall not be infringed seems pretty clear to us. We have many gun owners who are all for a ban on so-called "assault" weapons, one gun per month, licensing, etc. ad nauseum. Just as long as they don't touch their precious deer rifle. What they fail to understand is the antis will not be satisfied until all of us are disarmed. They are already making rumblings about this, calling for bans on the .50 and "sniper" rifles. What these hunters fail to realize is their deer rifle is considered a "sniper" rifle by those lunatics.
