This is a sad tragidy indeed. Could it have been avoided, who knows.
What it does tell us is violent criminals don't care about ecomonic wealth or georgraphic location, you can still be a victim.
It should also wake those who haven't done so already ,but whatever measure needed to prevent crime. Whether it's an alarm system,self-defense course, or going armed. Do not become placid and think it can never happen to be because you live in a nice neighborhood, those don't exist anymore. Criminals have cars and can come to you now and are willing to do so.
Somehow, the mantra of "Just give them what they want" collapses in the face of reality. Those who would disarm us absolutely can not face the fact that EVIL exists. They can not accept that sometimes it walks amongst us unbidden nor can they understand its very nature. By rejecting to come to terms with this reality, they are wholly unprepared to deal with it when it does reveal itself … “How could this happen?” If they were the only victims of their failure, it would be a just outcome. However, when the victims of their willful ignorance become the most innocent among us … well, they are now damnable persons.
Unfortunately, no one … not even the authorized journalists will dare speak the obvious …that, just maybe, sometimes there is only one course of action … to fight … and just maybe, it’s better to do it in the most efficient way. Until then … they will continue to ask the question, “How could this happen?” without really wanting to know.
Seems like most Americans only took a very narrow lesson from 9/11 - get tough with airplane hijackers. Obviously there wasn't enough fighting back at VT when one man with an ordinary pistol was allowed to kill 32 people. Either you are prepared to return fire*, or you are prepared to die.
*When legally authorized to do so. Otherwise, you are legally required to die.

"At 3 a.m. Hayes and Komisarjevsky allegedly returned and got into the house through an unlocked cellar door."
