While Shoppers who were surveyed in focus groups indicated they would rather not have to go through metal detectors, they appeared willing to accept them if the government raised the terror alert level, he said.
Yep--and put your backpacks and purses on conveyor belts, take off your shoes...
Everything in the opposite direction of the obvious solution.
. . . they appeared willing to accept them if the government raised the terror alert level, he said.
ReplyDeleteBecause we all know that the government would never raise the terror alert level for the very reason that doing so tends to make people more accepting of the idea of surrendering Constitutional rights.
What a nation of sheep we have become.
Everything in the opposite direction of the obvious solution.
ReplyDeleteYou assume the government is trying to solve the same problem that rational people would try to solve. They are not. The "problem" the government wishes to solve is uppity taxpayers who don't know they are the government's property.

ReplyDeleteThose who would give up freedom for security, deserve nether.
What exactly is the criteria for a focus group? What EXACTLY is it,and who makes the descisions to call it such?!?!
ReplyDeleteGood point Chris. Who's to say that they didn't hand pick their "focus group" to be focused on any number of specific criteria. I doubt it was any type of a scientific cross section of the general populace. As for me, I'll vote for freedom over so-called "safety measures" every time.
ReplyDeleteI've got to dispute this post a bit. I read the article and 90% of the other quotes are similar to these:
ReplyDelete"We cannot remain the kind of nation that we are, that we want to be, that we intend to be in terms of freedom, if we emphasize security by turning civilian gathering places into armed fortresses," McHale said at a news conference on post 9/11 security on Thursday.
"Law enforcement and security prevention measures, no matter how good, cannot forestall a tragedy such as this from happening," it said.
I think people aren't willing to lay down as much as we think they are... Hell, when talking about the threat level it even stated:
"If you look back through the years, this is a tactic and practice of Al-Qaeda to express threats during the Christmas season," FBI special agent Ross Rice said at the time, adding that the information had not been corroborated.
Rice said an FBI bulletin went out to law enforcement agencies to advise them to be vigilant as malls become crowded with holiday shoppers.
But he said he did not think any new security measures would be put in place in response to the threat as most local agencies already increase patrols at malls during this time.
