Mindful Musings reports on a petition to save the Second Amendment. Click the title link here to get to Chris Horton's commentary, and click the title link on his blog to sign the petition.
I couldn't find a link or the text of the petition on Rep. Cantor's Save the Second petition site. Have you read it and could you please provide a link? Thanks.
I have signed the petition. I am outraged. The second amendment should be treated as written, and any law should be strictly scrutinized. There is the old chestnut that the first amemendment does not allow a person to yell 'fire' in a crowded theater. At the same time, it does not put any prior restraints on what a person says. Similarly, the second should not put any restraints on where, or what a person carries-though obviously there can be laws against misuse of those arms. And I don't believe for a minute that smart lawyers really get this concept wrong through conflating the mere possession and the actual use of arms.
I beleive the text of it is just what's on that web page--I see nothing to indicate otherwise, which would make it easy to expose as fraudulent if it was used to say we supported something else. It clearly condemns this latest move by the DoJ and Cantor has an A- from GOA, so I'm inclined to trust enough to sign--but I also took a screenshot of the web page just in case.
Some of the wording, like this: "For the first time in years we have the opportunity for the Supreme Court to clearly say that the second amendment applies to all Americans and that no government can ban all handguns."
Well, I'll give it a shot...how much worse could it get?
I just spoke with a nice lady at Rep. Cantor's DC office and she transferred me to an assistants voicemail where I left a message requesting further information on the petetion, specifically the actual text. I'll post a follow-up when they return my call.

ReplyDeleteIn the post I linked to, Chris said "click on the title link."
ReplyDeleteI'll update this to clarify.

I'm petitioner #1145.
ReplyDeleteWhere's the text of it? After the "republican" brief from the DOJ I don't think I'm signing until I rear it.
ReplyDeleteCantor's site www.EricCantor.com has "common-sense solutions" on it...I seem to have heard that quite a bit recently.
Excuse me if I'm being a little paranoid here, but I don't think it's unwarranted.

ReplyDeleteStill no word yet from Rep. Cantor's office. I'll try them again tomorrow. I see that the signature count has doubled to 2816 since this morning
