A Bad Ending

A student who turned in an "alarming" creative writing assignment referencing suicide and the Virginia Tech shooter was involuntarily committed, then expelled from the University of Virginia's College at Wise after campus police found loaded guns in his car.
I imagine if you're reading this post from a campus internet connection, you're now reading about Virginia Tech, guns, killing and suicide, so maybe that'll qualify you for a search and commitment, too! No, no, don't thank me, thank them.

It's called "Creative Writing" for a reason. I wonder what the liberal arts gatekeepers of acceptability would do with a young John Ross or Matt Bracken in their classroom?

Me, I'd have insisted on a search warrant, and challenged it later on probable cause.

The victim gives his side of things here (scroll down to comments by capablanca911).

  1. "Juhan said college administrators felt they had handled the situation quickly and judiciously, and that the student had violated no state laws."-from the article.

Translation: He has thoughts and we nipped it in the bud before it could spread to other students. And we don't mind breaking state law to do it.

  2. More detail is available at this OCDO thread:

A few notes: Barber was TDO'd under the current law. The Virginia General Assembly just made it much easier to TDO someone.

The professor involved in this happens to be Justice Scalia's son.

There's so much going on with this story, it probably needs a followup blog entry.

  3. "..was involuntarily committed.."

And what laws did he break? What if he decided he wasn't going to be committed?

David...I have just about had it.

These BASTARDS can come for anybody, at anytime, for any reason. There are no courts.

    You are dead already.

I am going to speak my mind. Someone wants to violate my liberty for it...well, they can try.

God give me the strength to stand when I must.

  4. Ok...

How do you get a search warrant when there are no law that says you cannot keep weapons in your car?

If someone kills one of these creeps for trying to force him/her against their will into "commitment", I do not blame them.

Reminds me of Lesson No. 1 from Mike Vacderboegh's "Six Good Lessons".

  5. Looks like the pantie wetters have learned their lessons. If they crap their diapers about anything, they just commit you for a few days and WHAM - your rights are out the window.

    This crap makes me sick.
