To be honest, Ireland was actually a gun-control paradise overall. The Republic of Ireland that is. The Northern counties of Ulster are, and were, still officially part of the UK which is where the vast majority of the violence has happened over the past 60 years. The IRA has not operated in the Republic since the end of the Irish Civil War in the mid 1920's.
The thing is Ireland, up until recently, has been an agrarian, homogenous society. That made Ireland very stable and relatively safe. Sadly, that appears to be changing. I expect to see a lot more crime and violence on Irelands shores in the near future.
So I guess if the advice is to have a stable, homogeneous agrarian society, it ought to work pretty well--for now. Assuming that does not change, and no enemies foreign or domestic change things.
Funny thing about life on Planet Earth throughout history. Unanticipated change seems to be the norm.
David, If you want a gun free utopia, pretty much yeah. OTOH, that also means that you have to continue to be dirt poor subsistence farmers so that the guys with guns have no interest in what you have.
Oh Yeah, that should be interesting! They all did such a good job with the IRA, and so quickly and efficiently!

Unanticipated change only happens to those who do not pay any damn attention at all.
ReplyDeleteEvery change of monumental historic impact had plenty of precursors that should have been sufficient to cause the aware to anticipate it.
