gHarmony

DEAR DR. BROTHERS: I always told my husband he should get a hobby, but I never thought he'd take my advice. Now I regret ever opening my mouth. Ever since he bought his first gun, he's been like a different person...He's now buying more guns, and it's getting kind of creepy. What can I do? -- D.F.

Dear Abby, Dear Abby,
My fountain pen leaks...

I'm always surprised to find gun owners treading lightly around the women in their lives. I don't have any solutions once the bed has been made.

My only advice would be to ensure compatibility on the important things before committing yourself. And especially before bringing children into the equation.

One of the early dates ought to be a trip to the range, as well as a candid discussion about guns and freedom.

OK, enough channeling my inner Ann Landers, unless I can start making money at it through gHarmony...

  1. I am a lucky man indeed. My woman loves them. She even has one of her own.

  2. my lady fell in love with shooting the first day i took her to the range.

now she's looking around for AR parts to build one for herself.

  3. My hunch is this woman is unhappy about the cost and is not allowing her true feelings to be known. She is stacking the question to get the answer that she wants to have support in getting in his face.

  4. In my experience, they pretend to like guns until the relationship implodes, then they use your fondness for guns against you.

  5. D.F. (not like she'll ever come here to read this),

"He wakes up early on Saturday mornings to go to the shooting range"

Nothing wrong here. Is your spouse not allowed to pursue his interests, or is there some family arrangement which is more important, and should not be rescheduled?

"...now he's taken to cleaning his rifle in our bedroom!"

I wouldn't tolerate this. Well, perhaps if I lived in a one-room cabin. Tell him to clean elsewhere. I wouldn't like flecks of lead all over my bedroom, and I think the smell of kerosene would become irritating after a while.

"What's even stranger is that all the talk we used to have about raising a kid has ceased."

This may be a warning sign that you married someone with an immature attitude toward marriage. I know about this firsthand.

"He's now buying more guns, and it's getting kind of creepy. What can I do?"

I guess that depends on how much of the household income he is blowing on guns. If it's causing financial problems, see my note above. I also have experience with spousal budgeting problems.

Now it would be nice to here Mr. F's side of the issue.

  6. Should read: "...it would be nice to hear..."

Goddamn homophones. They work in pairs and gang up on you.

rofl TJP. Sorry, that's just the funniest thing I've read on the interwebs in some time...as if grammar, punctuation, spelling, or anything else really mattered to most people here. I applaud your self correction and wish it extended to others in all aspects of their lives.

  8. The issue of firearms can be a minefield for married men who have decided to keep and/or bear arms after "the bed has been made".
There is nothing like buying a gun to test the foundations and compatibility of a relationship. If you're unlucky, you will discover - to your horror - that your spouse just does not "get it", considers ALL firearms to be eeeeevil and wants nothing to do with them. And wants YOU get rid of them too, thank you very much.
If your relationship should ever deteriorate to a point where lawyers are involved and custody of kids is a concern, well, this is where all sorts of lurid and sexed-up accusations (um, LIES) about what you do or plan to do with your firearms can lead to a very bad outcome.
I'm amazed, but full of understanding at the lengths that some men will go to keep their ownership of guns under the radar. I just read about some guy who hid money in his own bank, bough a pistol with cash etc etc. It's sad, but it says as much about the status of men and what it means to be a man in today's society, as it does about firearms. It seems to me that a certain kind of woman has a fear and loathing of both, but just makes it more obvious in the case of the inanimate object

  9. Again in this case its not owning the guns thats an issue to the wife. Its the amount of money which is clear. Follow the money.
I've seen too many men allow themselves to be suckered by woman who have an agenda and do not let on until after they feel they have the poor slob trapped. I have never seen this with a woman who has an education and is able to make their own living doing something that they enjoy doing. Woman with no real education used the system as their security to trap a man and use that system to demand the man to do such or else. Any man that falls into this trap is a moron for not using his God giving ability to think and reason.
Again this woman is upset about the money and my hunch is this guy as a nice collection started.

  10. "Goddamn homophones. They work in pairs and gang up on you."

    Shouldn't that be:
"Goddamn homophones. They work in pears and gang up on you."

    ;-)
