President-elect Obama plans to use his executive powers to make an immediate impact when he takes office...And we all remember what the wretched Bush the Elder did with one of those...
I'm coming across a new theme from some on the "pro-gun" side that Obama isn't going to move on guns--at least for his first four years--because of concerns by some legislators that it may cause them grief with their constituents (not because they actually believe what they say to get elected). It seems to me this overlooks not only what a wildly popular cult leader with a fanatical following in the millions can do with executive orders, and also the opportunity a convenient mass shooting would present to whip the possessed congregation into an eye-rolling frenzy.
But say I'm wrong, and the voices of "We're safe for the first term" are right: wouldn't that mean we'd been played by those warning us in shrill and certain terms about the perils of electing "the most anti-gun president in American history"?

But even though his handwriting was on it, he didn't actually read it.
ReplyDeletethe fact is that these people believe the polls and their own propaganda. The polls, even among gunowners, show that a major agree with an AWB. Ditto for the "gun show loophole." We have allowed the leftist SOBs to frame the debate by corrupting the language. The phrasing of their domestic "policy" (before it was taken down)promises that they will go after semi-autos and the private, intrastate sale of arms. Certainly we can expect arms and ammo import bans, for the simple reason that they can. They will do everything to split us off from the "sporting" shooters and the "prags." What we have to get across to them is that there are consequences for pushing "reasonable regulation." Heck, we might even adopt the nickname, "The Unreasonables" to use right along with "Three Percent."
ReplyDeleteHmm. Topic of my next essay.

Safe for the first term. Uh-huh. How did that work out when Bill Clinton was elected? Didn't Slick Willie say himself that his semi-auto rifle ban was one of the biggest reasons the Democrats lost both houses of Congress two years into his first term? And I'd like to know how many gunnies sat out the '92 elections because of Daddy Bush's import ban...
ReplyDeleteI fully expect him and his disciples in Congress to come out against firearms from the beginning. It will start with the popular hoplophobe buzz-phrase "Reasonable common sense gun control" and go from there.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone cares to notice, David has already shown today that Zero's gang is already covering their tracks. Their first priority will be to shut down the oppositions' voice. After that, anything and everything else that bugs them. It's the socialist way. They are not going to wait for Zero to be sworn in, and they are already busy. 71 days is plenty to put a lot in place. Right after he swears in, it's off to the side to do a little autographing, and it hits the ground running. Meanwhile it hits the parties and the wheels are hitting second gear. It wants results, FAST, and intends to get them. Opinion: Events and people are going to arrive a lot faster than we may be able to react. Analysis: Your move.
ReplyDeleteGiven a "terrorist" attack or a bad mass shooting in the next four years, they will try for the "assault weapons"
ReplyDeleteThe first term?
ReplyDeleteAny day after 15March2009 without some EO/Law/Regulation will be a miracle.
Gee, the principal in the creation of HR 6257 was re-elected. That's the starting point for the next fe'ral gov't disarmament attempt.
ReplyDeleteI mean... hello?
"I'm coming across a new theme from some on the "pro-gun" side that Obama isn't going to move on guns--at least for his first four years--"-David.
ReplyDeleteAgain, let me explain, pragmatism is fully adjustable.
Those who doubt BHO/Schumer/Pelosi intent re gus are fools. Expect an exec order a la Bush 41 and follow up legislation at leisure. This gang is looking to use EOs for multiple issues. Bear in mind that congress can override EOs, but for some reason it never does.
ReplyDelete1/20/09 is the end date for us.
ReplyDeleteI count 70 days from 11/11/08.
Make 'em count, boys and girls.
The whole "Obama will govern as a centrist" meme ignores the Democrats in control of both houses of Congress. The path of least resistance for Obama will be leftist, not centrist. I'd guess its likely Obama won't advance an outright AWB by executive order, but that's not worth much if he just has to wait for Pelosi and Reid to send him one to sign.
ReplyDeleteQuestion, does EO override the Constitution????
ReplyDeleteAll the damn time.
ReplyDeleteEvery bit as much as legislation and judicial activism.
It shouldn't, but "we" let it.
