Weekend Reading: Shameless Plug for Gun Rights Examiner

I'm promoting my Gun Rights Examiner column full bore hoping to make it a success. If you missed any columns, you can access the full archive here under the "More Articles" tab.

I ask all WarOnGuns regulars to help me promote this effort by becoming regulars there as well, going to the links, reading the articles and telling a friend.

  1. I sure read almost every one of your articles and some of the other peoples. I just don't always post a responce

  2. If you want me to follow your links more often, make them all directly clickable in Google Reader instead of having to click over here first.

  3. David,
Do I need to make a comment each time I visit your Examiner column, or will the site automatically register a presence?

  4. There's a feed link on the site there Sevesteen at the bottom of each post.

    WWW-it's automatic. Thanks.

  5. Not quite what I was whining about, but I've added the Examiner posts to my reader.

In Google Reader, the ideal situation is when the link to the main outside page is in the text near the beginning of the post--I'll let it load in a new tab while I continue to read, then look at it when I'm done with the original post. No time spent waiting for page loads. When the link is in the headline, it isn't available in Reader--I have to click over to your blog, then to whatever you have linked to. In that case, the part that shows in my reader has to be more interesting before I will follow any links.

You may have reasons for doing it this way--your blog, your rules.

  6. No, I don't do it that way because of any rule--I do it that way because that's the option Blogger gives and I'm tech retarded--I've admitted that since day one. On top of that, as with many things, I just don't get what readers do or what their advantage is--every time I look at them I ask myself what's the big deal--but you're dealing with someone who was PO'd when the mouse was introduced because I found it totally non-intuitive and frustrating. I just added a link under the text "Gun Rights Examiner column"--is that what you're talking about doing? I'm not seeing what it does any different than having the link in the title...

  7. An example of what I'm talking about is your recent post '100 Bottles of Beer on the Deck...100 Bottles of Beer..."

I read blogs almost exclusively through Google Reader. In the Reader version of your beer bottle post, there are only two links available--The "headline" is to the post on your blog, the other to a Google Search for Joe G. In order to get to the Times story you are talking about, I have to go to your blog and then click the headline. This is unique among the many blogs I read.

Your way makes sense if I were reading primarily by coming directly to your blog rather than using the RSS feed. Usability is a surprisingly difficult thing to get right, and there is no way to please everyone.
