"Federal belt-tightening would worsen the problem right now," said Kevin Hassett, director of economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. [More]What kind of idiot would even suggest shrinking government as a solution to our woes?

"We're all clear on conservatism now, right?"
ReplyDeleteWell yeah, we are. If conservatism has come to be defined as conserving the treasure and power of the self-anointed elite.
Not so much, otherwise.
The guy's an idiot, not a conservative. I don't care who he works for or what he wants to label himself, his speech betrays him.
ReplyDeleteWhat are Conservatives supposedly "conserving"?
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly?
What happens when you "conserve" fuel? You still use it up...don't you?
It is akin to calling something water-resistant. It means it will get wet, it just doesn't want to.

I don't think barring new programs and spending, freezing wage and benefit increases, barring new hiring and eliminating positions left by retirees would be "belt tightening". That would be a display of (allegedly) common sense.
ReplyDeleteWhat would worsen the problem is eliminating fluff agencies and requires staff cut backs. Of course it would be worse--people would be fired! However, consistent, yearly cutting of the federal government would reduce the tax burden tremendously, and that would have the long term effect of allowing people to save, invest and spend.
