Virginia lawmakers are considering legislation that would allow law enforcement officers to interview suspects using voice stress analyzers, controversial devices that measure the voice for signs of deception. [More]BEEP.
Probable cause.
Well, what have we here?
FREEZE, PUNK!
BANG! BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG!
(Later):
Oh, it wasn't calibrated properly?
No matter, they acted in good faith.
And remember--with the "Only Ones," we're all suspects.

Did y'all know I was a mute?
ReplyDeleteHaven't been able to say a single word in the presence of a law enFORCEment officer since, oh, about 12:15 p.m. today.
And go ahead and Tase me, bro,
but ya better never let me go...
Oh come on.... They wouldn't do thahhhhht!
ReplyDeleteLongbow
Can we use them on recordings made by politicians?
ReplyDeleteLegislator Richard Saslaw says gun rights advocates are like the cast of "Deliverance." OK, during my interrogation, I'll be the guy on the porch with the banjo. "....."
ReplyDelete"You sure can play that thing."
"...."
Most of the arrests here are over drugs and drug-related violence. Keeps that statist bureaucracy just humming along.
The mayor's daughters have been witnessed using marijuana at parties. Think maybe THEIR suppliers are exempt?
And Gov. Timmy "Million Moms" Kaine is cutting the schools budget but giving more to law enforcement, I understand. Wanted: ignorant amoral people to commit crime for fun and profit. Apply anywhere.
There seems to be a strong police lobby in Virginia. Whenever they want something, another 'tool' perhaps, they just ask.
ReplyDeleteThe Republicans and many Democrats deliver.
Not enough people realize that stress doesn't necessarily mean lie.
Yeah, no one ever gets stressed when they talk to the cops.
ReplyDeleteRight.
"The sheriff's office used the analyzers in 2002 and 2003, even though they were illegal. His agency and several others that used the analyzers believed that the state code did not specifically prohibit their use, Roberts said."
ReplyDeleteFor the REST of us, ignorance of the law is no excuse.
On top of all that, the results are worse than chance!
Basically the same as polygraphs - useful for intimidation of the ignorant only. Always have an attorney speak for you. He's trained to be unstressed when answering questions.
At least with a polygraph, you know you're being analyzed. With this technology, you may never know.
ReplyDeleteAny consensual encounter could be secretly recorded and analyzed later.
Very dangerous.
The Thought Police.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'll soon be a felon, so my 5th Amendment right to remain silent so as to avoid self-incrimination will become a civil rights issue if they do not honor it. Won't have to register my guns either. Sometimes that Catch-22 really IS the best there is.
And yes, the police -- local and state -- lobby the legislature in uniform during work hours to push for more gun control, more search powers and less privacy for us. Every year. Sometimes the newspaper prints a photo. Cool.
