Famed Appalachian moonshiner Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton, whose incorrigible bootlegging ways were as out of step with modern times as his hillbilly beard and overalls, took his own life rather than go to prison for making white lightning, his widow says. [More]

  1. This is just tragic. I have friends who brew beer and I know how good that can be. It's a shame I'll never have the chance to sample the results of a lifetime of skill-brewing.

  2. Who did he harm? Why he harmed the delicate sensibilities of the revenuers.

That right there deserves a death sentence.

Well, the Tax man's bottom line for one. And you know how pissy the thieves get when you steal from them!

  4. A tragedy. A truly epic loss.

The end of an era, and quite possibly, the first casualty of the Second Ameican Revolution.

  5. "Popcorn is getting everybody drunk," the governor's Highway Patrol escorts complained and when Irwin told him to stop, Sutton packed up and left, Irwin recalled.

  6. You can still buy whiskey made on George Washington's plantation. HIS still is a historic preservation treasure.
Well, for all the ATF's efforts, I have relatives who still get Mason jars of 'shine whenever they want, right here in the suburbs. I make wine, and it's legal to make up to 200 gallons a year. If "Popcorn" was "getting everybody drunk," was he using restraints and a funnel? Then it's not his responsibility, just like Mr. Iknadosian of Phoenix isn't responsible for what legal gun purchasers do with them later. The guy at McDonald's isn't prosecutable if you buy a Supersize Coke and drown someone in it.
It's a shame freedom has been replaced in the public consciousness with "social responsibility."
The totally irresponsible get lots of breaks. This Madoff guy got to spend millions of other people's money and live like a Saudi king. His remaining few years spent in prison? I think he'll wake himself up laughing every morning.
