Red's Settles with ATF

An Idaho gun shop that went to federal court to keep the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from pulling its gun license has reached a settlement with the agency. [More]
And here's a more detailed story with the happy bottom line:
"It's over now, so Red's can keep working for another 100 years or more."
Naturally, Ryan Horsley won't be able to say much more than this. But here's the thing: His reacting as he did was absolutely the right thing to do. He made noise, he got attention and ultimately, he survived. Had he not, his family business would have been quietly murdered in the dark.

Congratulations, Ryan. I'm happy for you.

  1. This is just what I hoped for that Red's would get its fair day in court in the system that we have in place. Seemingly they have but its just better than Red's staying in business. This has lead to a different 4473 and some other changes that will keep other dealers from falling into the same paperwork trap.
No matter anyone's feelings about ATF, they have learned from this matter and the proof is there are changes in the way they do business and the buyers form they fill out.

  2. WOW!!

I find it hard to believe that "F" Troop has settled.

Normally they go after people with a vengeance, until they bleed 'em dry financially.

    Hats off to Ryan Horsley!!

  3. Apparently, no abbreviations on a 4473 are acceptable. This can be laughable, given the small size of the boxes on the form. Instead of using standard postal codes that most normal people use, the name of a state must be splelled out. For most states, this not a problem, but for the place of birth box, spelling out "Massachusetts" instead of "MA" can be a problem. The BATFE believes that the two letter postal codes can lead to error.

  4. Not lack of intelligence.

    Deliberate malice.

    Do not underestimate your enemies.

  5. I bought a rifle last week and the new forms no longer have you write yes or no. They have checkboxes.

My guess is this change is probably due to Red's.

  6. Red's settled with the ATF? You mean ATF has been dissolved and people can now mind their own business in peace?

Wait, this must be just another fantasy moment.

  7. How very pragmatic of Ryan to work within the system to achieve his ends.

    Bravo Zulu!

  8. And how very telling that it was a Threeper like myself who did more reporting on the progress of Ryan's case throughout the duration than all the pragmatic gun bloggers combined.
