ReplyDeletePerhaps I am showing my ignorance here, but wasn't there a Supreme Court case that struck down poll taxes as unconstitutional because you couldn't tax a fundamental right? Couldn't that be used to strike down NFA, or at least unmask it?

I also did a quick search and turned up Harper v VA Board of Education, so you're right, there was also a legal case.
Interestingly the movement to require IDs to vote is being challenged on poll tax grounds because--among other costs, you need to pay a state fee in order to obtain a certified birth certificate to vote--just not, apparently to be elected...:
